PS3 Sales Jump 178 Percent: That Makes, What 139 Sold?

ps3-princess.jpg

I kid, I kid! While it's nice to see the system picking up some momentum, it is still not where I want it to be just yet. It is however evident that other people don't care nearly as much about the backwards compatibility removal as I do. Sales of the Sony PS3 have spiked 178%.

This increase in sales coincides with the announcement of a reduced price 60GB model (GBP 349) and the stripped down 40GB (GBP 299). The increased console sales are the highest the console has seen since the third week past the release of the system. Alone with the revitalized sales of the system, games like Resistance: Fall of Man and Heavenly Sword have seen sales spikes. Resistance was pushed from the 22nd spot in sales to 8th, while Heavenly Sword was pushed back onto the top 40 to 14th place.

Perhaps this will eventually lead to enough sales to stimulate developers into picking up the console. Just give me a reason to buy one Sony. Just give me a reason.

if you need three good reasons to get one now:
- Heavenly Sword
- Warhawk
- Folklore

and three good reasons to get one this year:
- Ratchet & Clank
- Uncharted
- Wipeout HD

It should be noted this figure applies only to the UK.

Try it Asterick. You'll like it.

Motorstorm is another reason to buy one now. Dang that game is fun.

349 is not a bad price considering it started out at 499! I might just pick one up if I see any real reason. Heavenly Sword sounds like the only one worth playing at the moment.

I say this owning a PS3...

Most of the catalog of PS3 games are either:
- ports of 360 games (Graw)
- unoriginal (Motorstorm)
- ports waiting to happen with extra features elsewhere(VF5)
- delayed (Orange Box)
- mediocre games that require a series of excuses to "love" @ $60 a pop (Heavenly Sword, Warhawk)

But there is the occasional gem that makes up for a lot of it. I truly think that Everyday Shooter is a game that can make the purchase of the system worth while. It is interactive art with shades of a great twin stick shooter. Depending on personal preference, Resistance or FolkLore might be your thing. Also, if you're big ups on HD movies, a Beta- uh.. Bluray player isn't that bad.

The PS3 is not for everyone *currently*. I would be hard pressed to recommend it to anyone that has already purchased a 360 for instance. But there does seem to be some great games coming soonish (Uncharted looks great, R+C (if you haven't played it before), whatever Team Ico is working on, etc.) that will make the high price tag a little less difficult to explain.

- yes, GRAW2 is a port, but even the devs at Ubi said that it's (one of the rare PS3) superior ports (compared to the 360 version).
- calling MotorStorm unoriginal is like calling Halo a generic FPS or SMG another 3D platformer. they all do a particular thing that's been done before, but they do it really well. with games like flOw, EverydayShooter, and other indie-developed games coming out for the PS3, it's hardly the console that discourages original game development.
- so PS3-to-360 ports that are delayed but have extra features (VF5) are a good thing, but 360-to-PS3 ports that are better (GRAW2, Vegas, etc.) aren't? can't have it both ways.
- just because you don't love a game doesn't make it "mediocre". Heavenly Sword has an 82% average rating, Warhawk has an 84%. those don't exactly read like "mediocre" ratings. maybe not "great", but hardly "mediocre".
- Warhawk is $40, not $60, yet despite not being a "full priced title", it's always full with people playing and most of us will end up logging in more hours having fun with that title than on most other games. it's hard not to love Warhawk unless either a) it's not your kind of game; or b) you got your arse handed to you and you got frustrated by it. blame the carpenter, not the tools.

Out of the games I've seen out right now, Folklore is really the only one that has caught my eye as a title I'm really intrigued by. Motostorm, while a good game isn't something that would have lasting appeal to me. I've played the demo in gamestop and it's ok.

My problem is this: I need backwards compatibility. My PS2 is slowly dying (it is making the clicking grinding noise that is common with early generation PS2s) and I don't really much feel like buying a new system when I could just pony up for a PS3.

I also can't justify the $500 for a 60gigger when all I'm really going to do is play that one exclusive and legacy titles.

I guess either I'm going to wait for wip3out (which I'm a total whore for) or for my system to finally kick the bucket. Little Big World also looks pretty damn spiffy.

@Fluke: I see nothing in Motorstorm that isn't done better else where currently or before elsewhere. I'm glad GRAW is "better" on PS3 I guess, but since online is major portion of the game, one could argue that LIVE makes that game have a longer life on 360, since PS3 online isn't exactly quick/easy/active yet. When borrowing Warhawk I found the game to be mediocre. It didn't have enough maps or modes and for $40/$60 you can get something better (like say, Resistance maybe?).

You said: "it's hard not to love Warhawk unless either a) it's not your kind of game; or b) you got your arse handed to you and you got frustrated by it. blame the carpenter, not the tools."

How about "C": It *is* my type of game but I found similar/better games with single player for cheaper ( $5 Battlion Wars on 'cube) or with a real single player mode AND better online where I can invent my own game modes for the same price (Halo 3)? Just because someone disagrees with you that doesn't give you the right to be all snippy about it and start making personal attacks.

About Heavenly Swords Metacritic score: it's great if you care about what other people think about the game you just bought. IGN thought my favorite PS2 game of 2006 was a 3 out of 10, so I don't place that much in review scores personally (although I'm liking ActionButton.net more and more). What I *do* know about Heavenly Sword was that actually playing the demo wasn't fun and borrowing it from my friend didn't change my mind either. I'm sure that if I looked past the not so fun "hat meets gong"-based puzzles and the imitation of God Of War combat I would have seen that playing as Cat-Bjork Chan was fun and the production values were really nice. It's not a bad game, it just required me to make excuses and look past glaring flaws to say something nice about it in context. And again...for $60 I can think of better ways to spend my money. ($40 gets you God of War 1 and 2 for instance)

I'm sorry that I don't see the value in the bulk of PS3 games currently on shelves now and I'm super stoked that you bought/love/continue to enjoy those games. These are all my personal opinions of course. Feel more than free to disagree with them. Toe-may-toes / Toe-mah-toes and all that jazz.

Back on topic though: Backwards compatibility is more important than Sony thinks it is. It may be important to the user depending on how many PS2 games they plan to buy/spend time with. For some, it won't even register. For others (self included), it's a deal breaker. I think it's a pretty crappy when they are removing a perfectly good feature for a very short term advantage.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
