Rumor: 'No Comment' On Toshiba HD-DVD Xbox 360?

I normally don't like rumor-mongering, but with the way things have been going in the video game world it seems like almost all of them have at least a sliver of truth in then. People have been asking for an Xbox 360 with HD-DVD built-in since the inception of the system. Microsoft was quick to satiate the calls for things like HDMI and 1080p. Now it seems a logical stance for them to maintain a distance from the format wars. Investing too much in a doomed format could ultimately hurt sales for them in the future.
Last week, it was speculated that Toshiba may be working on off-brand 360 with an integrated HD-DVD drive. The "leak" said that the system would not be announced until late 2008 to early 2009. If there is one thing that Microsoft is, it's proprietary. It is highly unlikely that they will allow a third-party to develop independent hardware for one of their largest cash cows, although not outside the realm of possibility. Well, some crafty folks at Stuff.tv managed to get a tentative "no comment" from Toshiba.
As with most rumors, there really is no affirmation one way or the other. The time before the "official" announcement is a long ways off. This could mean that the guy is simply trying to make it harder to confirm he is lying, or maybe it is just a really early leak. One thing we should also take into account is that Toshiba already has made DVD drives for the 360, it is still a possibility that they are making the internal drive for Microsoft themselves. I guess we will all have to wait until late 2008 to know for sure.

You boys are on a roll!
I'm a little confused. Isn't Microsoft actively backing the HD-DVD format, as well as a number of studios? I don't understand why they would want to stay away from the format wars, when it seems like they're already participating. Am I missing something?
Man, I keep forgetting how "wrong" some of the captions on the images are here... *shudders at mech sechs*
