Tales Of The Yellow Dog: Installation
Welcome back for another installment of Tales of the Yellow Dog, where we finally install Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3.
So far, we have backed up all of the save files on the PS3, Quick Formatted the drive and set aside 10GB of space for Linux, tracked down Yellow Dog Linux ver 5.0.2 with the bootloaders and we are fully prepped and ready to install.
Yellow Dog Linux will only display on a hi-def TV or Monitor through HDMI or Component cable. If you are connected to a hi-def TV, proceed to the next step.
Make sure you update your PS3 firmware to the most current one before proceeding. Just go to System Update on the XMB and confirm that you are running the most current GameOS.
When installing, never turn off the power. Doing so may cause some serious damage to your PS3. So don’t install during a storm or any event where you may lose power.
Take the Yellow Dog Linux DVD you recently burned and place it into your PS3. Attach your controller to the USB charge chord, also plug in a USB keyboard and mouse to the PS3.
On the XMB go to Settings --> System Settings --> Install Other OS.
When you select Install Other OS, the system will scan the DVD for the bootloaders, and will confirm the discovery with a displayed path that should look something like this: “ps3/otheros/otheros.bld”
Continue reading after the jump.
Then press “X” on the controller to start the installation. The screen will go blank for a second, then pop back.
Now select the OtherOS from the system settings to begin the YDL installation.
Settings--> System Settings--> Default System--> Other OS.
When asked to boot to the other OS, click “Yes”
The rest of the installation will take about an hour, and you will receive many prompts asking for a response. Select the affirmative for all questions, agree to the terms and conditions whenever asked and click next and yes a bunch. One confusing prompt tells you that you don’t have enough memory for something. Don’t worry, just plug ahead and you will do just fine.
That’s it really, once everything is said and done, you will boot into Linux. To get back into the GameOS, just click on the dock button at the top of the screen and go to:
Applications--> Utilities--> Boot into GameOS.
Join us next time as we help you adjust to the new OS with some helpful pointers and get you connected to the internets inside Yellow Dog Linux.

Right now, I've got an external drive connected to my PS3 with a big FAT32 partition for videos and stuff, and a smaller Linux partition that runs Gentoo. So I added storage and Linux without ever formatting the drive that came in it. Very good deal. I should probably write up just how I did that at some point.
Yellow Dog Linux, for the record, will not install and run successfully on an external drive, but Linux is Linux, so it could definitely be modified to do so... somehow.
