Tomb Raider Anniversary Hits The 360... Twice

tr_anniversary.jpg

So I was going to write up a little article alerting our UK readers with their sexy accents to the release of the PSP and Xbox 360 versions of Tomb Raider Anniversary on October 26 (10/23 in the US) when I noticed a little something odd in the press release.

See, a lot of fuss has been made about the 360 version of Anniversary being the first major retail game available for download through Xbox Live. A retail version will be out on the 26th, with episodic downloadable content coming in November, if you'd rather wait. Kathryn Clements, Senior Brand Manager for Tomb Raider, says that "now 360 owners will get the choice of either owning a boxed copy or downloading the game straight to their 360 hard drive." Mind you, at 2400 Microsoft Points for both installments, that comes out to $29.99, which is ten bucks cheaper than the retail version, so it's almost worth waiting a few weeks.

However, there's just one little catch. When the downloadable episodes hit Live in November, "players will require a Lara Croft Tomb Raider Legend disc." So basically, what they're saying is if you want Anniversary, you have to pony up for Legend first. And if you already have, hopefully you haven't traded it in yet. What's up with that? Even if you can find Legend used, it's probably not going to be ten bucks, so you'll end up spending more and waiting longer. Can someone please explain the logic of this to me?

Probably it reuses the engine and major textures or other graphics and sound files from Legend. Likewise, the downloadable Crystal Chronicles game on Wii will likely do the same thing, accessing resources from the other one that's actually going to be sold in a store. However, that is a little more understandable at least because both games are coming out very near each other...

Okay, Fuzzypaws, that actually makes sense, but then I still don't like the idea of having to buy another game. If it's additional downloadable content, then obviously you have to have the core game. But if you're positioning something as a separate, new game, it doesn't seem fair to make people have another title or else shell out more money to buy it at retail.

i see it as... if you don't have ledgend then pay 40 bucks... if you have ledgend or if you buy it... then we will give you a discount of 10 dollars... i don't see it as greed.. more like a discount with purchase

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
