USA Today Rides The Manhunt Bandwagon

manhunt3.jpg

With Manhunt 2's Halloween release date approaching, I fully expect to see a lot more of these articles as October rolls along. USA Today wrote today about Rockstar's controversial title appearing on the "family-friendly" Nintendo Wii. On an inside page, there's an article about how the title was originally rated AO, and discusses the changes necessary to achieve the saleable M rating. Of course, the article on the front page of the section naturally makes a big deal about how using the Wiimote to simulate stabbing and choking is much more frighteningly realistic than just pushing buttons. Obviously, Nintendo argues that they're just releasing games in a wide variety of genres, but the article posits that the Wii doesn't need to expand its user base, since the console continues to sell out across the globe. Right. Because stagnation is always fun. There's enough crap in the Wii software library already, thanks very much. Let's not give developers reason to not experiment and take risks.

And as with complaints about sex and/or violence on TV, Rockstar offered up the quite reasonable suggestion that people have the right to choose their entertainment. You don't like jubblies on your TV? Change the channel. Don't feel like stabbing prisoners as you escape from a psychiatric hospital? Play Super Mario Galaxy instead. It's that simple. Don't want your children simulating murder with their Wiimotes? Don't buy them the game. The rating is on the box for a reason. I hate when people try to tell me what to do.

Resident Evil was once a Gamecube exclusive and that's hardly family friendly, so why us everybody over flipping shocked that M games do get released on Nintendo systems.

*yawn* I would have bought Manhunt 2 when it was AO. since it has been watered down to an M rating, I don't see why I'd bother.

I would have liked to have seen what was necessary for a game to receive such a rating, but since the industry just gave it one large kick in the groin, I don't care anymore.

Ugh, USA Today needs to get their heads out of their asses, just like everyone who blames violent video games and such, and yeah, I'm sick of hearing the Wii referred as "family friendly." Bah.

As for Manhunt 2, yeah, I was probably going to get it, but now that they watered it down for that M rating, I don't think so.
