WiiWare in 2008
Well, no one can say that they didn't see this coming. Ever since the launch of the console I've been chomping at the bit for downloadable content for the Wii. Virtual Console is all fine and dandy, but being somewhat of a retro nut most of the games that I would normally download I probably still have a dusty copy of somewhere in my house. By and large the main reason I love my 360 so much is for the marketplace games, and the Wii is just waiting for similar content.
In a recent Nintendo press conference, president Satoru Iwata announced a whole slew of new "WiiWare" for the little console that could. So far, four companies have been confirmed to be developing titles: Hudson, Namco Bandai, Square-Enix and of course Nintendo itself. Mr. Iwata assured the press that the low priced downloads would not affect games sales. Each title is original and exclusively online, and therefor would there for not take money away from store fronts.

- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Little King and the Promised Country - Square-Enix
- Pokemon Bokujyou Channel - Nintendo
- Dr Mario & Saikin Bokumetsu - Nintendo (online multiplayer)
- Maruboushikaku - Nintendo (three player brain teaser)
- Minna de Puzzleloop - Nintendo (a motion controlled version of Magnetica)
- Star Soldier R - Hudson
- Bomberman - Hudson
- Joysound Wii - Hudson (karaoke)
One thing that is not mentioned is whether or not the system firmware will be updated to allow games and applications to be launched from the SD slot. That 512MB of storage seems reasonable right now, but it's going to fill up in a big hurry.

Launching games from the SD slot is something they should have put in in the first place, I think. But, if a firmware update can fix that, I'm all for it.
This is a really cool idea, I think Wii will finally start living up to it's potential over the next year. No more "One good game and 14 shovelware ports with crappy motion controls thrown in as an afterthought per month" and $40 minigame collections, hopefully.
Wow, had no idea that an FF:CC was being developed as an online title. Sweet!
However, there is still one burning desire that I require from WiiWare. WHERE THE HELL IS MY MOTHER 3!?
I've been waiting for Dr. Mario as a VC NES or SNES game since the Wii launched.
So, I'm all bouncy excited for a Wil specific Dr. Mario with online gameplay.

I think I'd be lying if I said I didn't wet my pants at the annoucement of "Pokemon Farm". It's been something I've wanted for years! To fully interact with your pokemon? Holy crap. Kudos to Nintendo! Kudos to GG for bringing us the news ^_^
Even before seeing screens I can honestly say that Star Soldier R is a first day purchase. While this a great solid launch list, I can't wait to see if NoA or NoE will add anything to their launches.

Personally, I think you should get some Wii points free with every Wii game purchase. I'm a poor starving college student! I can't afford these things!
Awesome! But I want more details on this Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Square Enix is coming out with. It isn't the same as the DS or other Wii FFCC game they're bringing out, is it?
