Assassin's Creed Novel Killed In Name Of Being P.C.

Well, it seems that we are not destined to get a trilogy of novels based upon Ubisoft's much-anticipated Assassin's Creed, based on what author Steven Barnes has said over at his personal blog. Apparently Ubisoft has become the latest corporation to wave the white flag in an effort to appease those who demand political-correctness, but with disastrous results. Ubisoft apparently started to receive complaints from members of the Ismaeli sect (descendents of the original assassins), whereupon the publisher started letting them get involved with the first novel's development:
They…suggested that Ubisoft, the game company, show more respect for their ancestors, and Ubisoft went all pitter-patter. Next thing we knew, they wanted to remove all religious references from the book. I guess the Crusades were about shoe size or something. Then they hired an expert to vet the book. Curious that they hadn’t thought about that before, eh? And finally, they wanted to send the book to the Agha Khan’s people for their suggestions. By this time, Marco was thoroughly disenchanted. The book was turning into puree of bat shit, and I was no longer amused. The whole three-book project died.
What I'm a little curious about is why Ubisoft is trying to appease these people with the development of the novels and not the game upon which the literature is based. I suspect there was a lot going on behind the scenes which we will never be fully aware of, but from the outside view this whole situation looks ridiculous.
