Game for Girls Creates Controversy: Irony or Poor Taste

Every since grand theft auto, making games riding controversy seems to be a guaranteed way to get free press. I'm not much for cell phone gaming personally, but creating a stir could be the best way to drum up some business. The latest game in the spotlight is the game Coolest Girl in School, a cell phone game where you "Lie, bitch, flirt your way to the top of the high school ladder".
"The activities in the game have been shown through vast amounts of research to cause significant, long-term problems for young people," a spokeswoman for the Australian Family Association told the Daily Telegraph this month.
The game seems reminiscent of the online game Sissy Fight. Players are given the task of becoming the most popular girl in school by use of drugs, sex, and other underhanded tactics. The game is riddled with adult subject material, which is something that would certainly not be suitable for the highschool girls.
"We have had a lot of press and, unfortunately the game has been misrepresented in some articles," says Owen. "It is ... a very tongue-in-cheek look at the perils of the quest for cool in high school. Key word: irony!"Owen notes that although activities such as smoking or using drugs "might seem obviously cool," they can work against a girl in the game because she could be sent to virtual rehab or have foul-smelling breath when a love interest approaches her.
Weather or not the game is actually ironic or not, it's probably not something that you want to give to your 13 year old. Any developer that calls a game "Grand Theft Auto for Girls" is obviously fishing for press. I'm sure that this is not going to be the last we will be hearing of these people, or this title.

I thought the reason gamers played games was because they wanted something better to do than than climb the high school social ladder. That is the opposite of fun.
So, the female equivalent of stealing cars and running from the cops is high school popularity? That's small fry! How about Lie, bitch, flirt your way to the top of the corporate ladder?" That's something worth lying, bitching, and flirting for.
Well, I imagine that's the sequel.
