Jumper Game In Development

jumperposter.jpg

I read Steven Gould's novel, Jumper, a couple of years ago and thought it would make a great movie. I was less than impressed by the recent trailer for the upcoming film because it looks like it has almost nothing in common with the book's original plot (other than the title and main character's ability and it also stars Hayden Christiansen, better known to me as "Darth Emo". My skepticism of this film translation seems to be pretty well-founded, seeing as how there's been a fair amount of negative press swirling around it for a while now. Well, surprise, surprise: a game based on the movie is also in the works. I know, I know, none of us are surprised by this, but it still sound pretty horrific, especially after this little nugget of knowledge:

Given its futuristic setting, chase elements and the focus on teleportation powers, Brash executives told Variety that Jumper was a natural to turn into a video game. Collision Studios is developing the game for PlayStation 2 and Wii, while RedTribe is making a version for Xbox 360. Brash plans to release the game on Feb. 14, day and date with the film.

The game's developers don't exactly fill me with a lot of hope, either. Collision is the lesser of two evils, seeing as how their various titles tend to be considered mediocre at best. However, RedTribe is a developer which is far less impressive, seeing as how their only release so far has been Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal; despite their Wikipedia entry's statement that the game was "critically acclaimed", the truth about that steaming pile is pretty easy to uncover.

Well, it looks like I'll be avoiding Jumper on all platforms, then. Hopefully my Christmas games will last me through the lean pickings of February.

I can say, I saw the previews well over two months ago, and had been reading about the adaptation over a year now...and I'm just disappointed. While I may be in love with Hayden he just doesn't cut it as the protaganist. This book is much darker than the previews lead you to believe and I found myself looking at the first full trailer and pointing out things that, even in the trailer, were wrong. I'm going to see it, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be disappointed.
