Lighter, Thinner PS2 Appears, Release Date Announced
Just a couple of days ago, Sony announced that a redesigned PlayStation 2 was on its way for the Holiday Season. Now, we have some more news. The remodeled system will come in the colors “Charcoal Black”, “Ceramic White” and “Satin Silver.” If you just cannot wait to get your hands on this model, it will be available in Japan on November 22 of this year. A vertical stand will also be available that day. In addition to the PS2's new slimming style, the AC adapter will now be housed internally in order to make room for your other consoles and electronics. How sweet of them.
It's amazing that the PlayStation 2 recently sold its 120 millionth unit. That's not a figure to shrug at. I have no doubt that this console is meant to redirect attention to the aging system and divert some of the hub-bub away from the newer consoles. The question is, will that many people bite? I'm doubtful on that front. However, this new model will make for an excellent replacement if your PS2 is broken or whatever. If you would like some more corporate spin and pictures of the new console, feel free to make the jump.

...but does it come with backwards compatibility? har har!
I'm kidding... sorta.
When will this be available in the US?
I'm shocked. I just found myself considering picking up a PS2 after having gone some four years without one. There have been more than a few PS2 titles I would have liked to have played.
I think that Sony will always produce some sort of PS2 hardware. With the sheer number of titles in its library, the PS2 prints money, too. And maybe by leaving the backwards compatibility out of the lower end PS3's, it helps to secure demand for PS2 hardware? I smell a win/win for Sony.
I'm game:P
Seriously. Mine's oooooooold! Also I'm hopin' a newer one'll play dvds better than my current one.
Hmm. Should I go with silver to match my new PSP, or a new color?
I'm seriously considering picking one up as well...I've been PS2-less for about 2 years now since my midnight-launch-OG-fatty died on me. There's also been quite a few games I've been dying to try out and/or complete (I STILL HAVENT FINISHED KH2)
I thought it would be a LOT smaller at this point in time. It doesn't seem Sony has done the kind of integration that they've become famous for.
@David B.
"smaller"? have you seen the slim? how much smaller / thinner can it get?
that'd be like telling LaraFlynnBoyle to go on a diet.
i have graphic novels that are bigger, heavier, and thicker than my PS2slim...
They should make it Walkman sized. Or like Game cube sized, with only an inch in height. I wonder if that'd be possible... it'd sure be beautiful.
Yeah you can't get *much* smaller than this thing. It's about the size of 2 game cases side by side.
It's a pretty amazing tribute to the power of the Playstation brand that there is yet another new model of this baby. It just won't die. 120 Million consoles? That's just nuts.
That's pretty cool. Only problem is, people who use a hard drive in their PS2 (such as myself) won't be able to do that with the new model...
*sniffs*
I smell some serious funk.
Anyone wonder why Sony suddenly dropped backwards compatibility on the PS3?
Well, here's your 16,000 yen answer :P
That PS3 is looking less and less like something I care to sink good money into.
Atari made the 2600 for something like 14 years, and Nintendo made the NES/Famicom for about 12 altogether. So the PS2, being more popular than either of those, ought to have 6 or 8 years left on it for sure. There may only be new games for another 3 or 4 years, but it'll be around, especially if Sony gives up the ghost on the PS3 and becomes more of a software company like everyone suggested Nintendo do when the Gamecube was in last place.
I don't see a lot of difference between this new one and the slim one I already have, but then, mine's been packed up for almost a year now.
