Square Enix To Publish Odin Sphere In Europe

odinspherebox.jpg

Square Enix announced today that they will be partnering up with Atlus to publish the beautiful PS2 RPG Odin Sphere in Europe. This marks the first time that Square has published a non-Square title in any PAL territory. If you haven't checked out Odin Sphere yet, it's a gorgeous game that was a bit of a cult/sleeper hit and really deserved a bit more attention than it got. It hearkens back to the good old days of hand drawn 2D sprites and includes an advanced alchemy system gives the game an extra level of depth. Add in multiple intertwining story lines and jaw droppingly gorgeous artwork to make this a definite must have for any fan of side scrolling action RPGs.

I hope this becomes a trend for Square Enix, championing well-deserving games for wider distribution. I absolutely LOVE Odin Sphere. It ain't perfection, but pretty damn close to it. Congrats to Vanillaware!

I don't think Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King was a Square-title, either, yet it was released here in the PAL-territories. ;D

The info about this being the first non Square PAL release came directly from their press release. Maybe they got their own info wrong?

Dragon Quest VIII was outsourced to Level-5 (Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy, Jeanne d'Arc), but Square-Enix owns the license.

I'll be looking forward to this. Lost my chance of getting the NTSC version (on Play-Asia, at least), so I'll just wait for the PAL version.

And yes, hopefully this becomes a trend for them.

Yeah, great... Square should get its ass up and start doing good games again rather than partnering with other companies just to have their name on a great game

Odin Sphere is fun until you realize you're doing the same thing over and over and over again, with nothing other than cutscenes to break up the monotony. Gameplay-wise, the game is mediocre at best. But, the art direction and execution are superb (except for the massive slowdown... what the hell is up with that?) and the voice acting is generally very good (the English voice acting anyway). It's worth a play, but it's definitely not one that most people will have the drive to see through to the end.
