Video: PS3 In Bizzaro Land
Advertising for the PS3 has been a rollercoaster in experimentation since the beginning White Room ads with the iconic nightmarish crying baby. Why anyone thought that tears could sell hardware is beyond me. I guess they were going for a star child like image from 2001, but it was just creepy and wierd.
Several months passed in the White Room and Sony changed their strategy with the excellent European 'This is Living' commercial with explosions, a suitcase full of money, an aged drag prom queen and a lipstick-crazed, gun-wielding starlet.
Recently they began the 'Only on PS3' campaign with the launch of the 40GB and 80GB units that works really well. It highlights the exclusive titles and features on the system, and the system blender look of all of the games trying to escape from the system is a solid visual statement.
The European market has always been a strange bird for adversing. Sony's next European ad is no exception. It falls somewhere between Mathew Barney's Cremaster Cycle and Kenneth Anger's Rabbit's Moon. There is even a Pootie Tang-ish bullet dodging sequence that split my seams. Check it out as the PS3 steps through the looking glass.

wow.
i think (hope) something (a lot of something!) is being lost in the translation...
And this is another reason why the ps3 will never sell well. People see this advertisements and think, What the hell do they want me to buy? a miniature freakshow?
now, the this is living comercial.. might have seem good in the first place, but seriously, would you try to sell a product by showing a commercial where money is blasted in an explosion? its like saying "come and waste your money on us!!"
