What's Going On With Marvel Universe Online?

marveluniverseonline.jpg

So who here actually remembers Marvel Universe Online? Come on, let's have a show of hands. Really, it's OK if you'd forgotten about that game, since I totally did, too. Apparently both the game's developer and publisher have, too, which has led some people to question the title's currently dubious fate.

Over at 1up, someone took notice of the fact that neither Cryptic Studios nor Microsoft has mentioned anything about the supposedly upcoming MMO for the 360 in over a year, and when questions were asked about the game's developement.... well, the questions were ignored in the least subtle ways possible. Which leads to the following question:

Is Marvel Universe Online dead? If not, it's certainly in serious trouble if no one involved -- publisher or developer -- can state anything as simple as "it's still coming." As already mentioned, Microsoft hasn't had an aversion to canceling MMOs well into development; True Fantasy Live Online was apparently near completion when the plug was pulled from the ambitious Level 5 online title for Xbox. Microsoft Game Studios head Shane Kim told EGM the title was doing fine just few weeks before the game was publicly canned.

I was looking forward to this game! Ironically this announcement comes like two days after talking about it and CoH/CoV.

I'm not looking forward to it because it's Marvel, but mainly because I think the studio could really do something nice with preset powers, CoH was lackluster enough when it came out to prevent me from playing CoV at all :\

Aww. It could've been somebody. It could've been a contender. I hope everything works out.

Actually it was mentioned in an interview about the merger of COx... They said that this partly frees Cryptic up to work on Marvel Online exclusively.

I just went on a Cryptic Studios tour a month and a half ago and they had a significant amount of their staff working on this. It is still alive.
