Final Fantasy Dissidia Impressions

dissidia.jpg

IGN's Anoop Gantayat is attending this weekend's Jump Festa in Japan, and managed to get some hands on time with the Final Fantasy mascot fighter, Dissidia. Before playing the game, it sounds like he was ready to dismiss the game as just a piece of Square-Enix fanservice shovel-ware. But now?

Rather than trying to adapt the Final Fantasy characters into some existing fighting game formula, the designers of Dissidia seem to have attempted to create an original fighting engine around the Final Fantasy characters -- at least the characters as they'd probably combat one-another in a Tetsuya Nomura movie.

If you, like me, were expecting a quick cash-in with Dissidia to take advantage of the popularity of the Final Fantasy characters and all that work Square Enix clearly put into developing its Crisis Core engine, you, like me, were wrong. Dissidia has the potential to be a rare breath of fresh air in the fighting genre, Final Fantasy characters or not.

Interesting. His impressions also discuss the environments, and what you can expect from the fighting itself. It's rare that a game really surprises people anymore, so it will be great to find out if this game will live up to Anoop's hype or if it will just be another way for Sephiroth junkies to get a fix. The PSP has been short on really good fighters, so another will be welcome. There's no date set for Final Fantasy Dissidia, either here or in Japan, so keep an eye out for more information on the game over the next few months.

Excellent! I'm getting more excited about this game each time I read about it.

So far there seem to be 10 confirmed in-game characters, spanning across the entire series. It's awesome they're including characters from the first two games, as it means we may be getting an equal distribution instead of focusing on VII and after, like Kingdom Hearts has.

So if he had such low expectations going into the event, I have to question why they even sent this guy in the first place. Seriously, what the hell?

I didn't know it was going to be an FF-character laden fighting game with a powerstone-like battlefield mixed with both stealing power and inflicting damage.

Why... that sounds almost familiar...

So Dissidia is like Ergheiz 2?

I might actually have to get it, if Pattapon doesn't sap away all my PSP playtime.

Keith - Anoop lives in Japan and has been with IGN for a long time, even before he moved out there. Although their presence is growing, Jump Festa isn't a huge videogame festival yet, so I think isn't so much that IGN "sent him" as he "just went."

Considering the nature of the business, it would be impossible to send someone completely neutral to do every preview, and I would be just as worried if they had a blind fanboy reporting. Focusing on his preconceptions misses the point that he didn't let those feelings affect his opinion of the title in the end. I think that's what we should want from writers, not expect them to be some blank slate every time they played a game.
