GlucoBoy: Fun With Diabetes

What's got tons of fun and zero insulin? If you answered "Wilford Brimley," you're half right!
The GlucoBoy is for the very young, not the very old, and it teaches kids with diabetes to be responsible with their glucose monitoring - by plugging into a GameBoy Advance or DS.
Inventor Paul Wessel spent three years getting permission from Nintendo to make the device, after being inspired by his young diabetic son's unfailing ability to remember where he'd stashed his GameBoy - but not his glucose monitor. GlucoBoy awards points to kids who perform their glucose tests on time, giving bonuses to results that fall within a certain range; there are even unlockable games!
Fantastic ways to help childhood diabetes aside, how ironic is it that Nintendo - the company who brings you 12-digit Wii codes in order to protect kids from harm - gave the green light to a device that measures the blood of children? It just goes to show that context is the most powerful force in the known universe...
