Of Tricks, Towels And Cheap Ass

Well, it's suddenly a bright and beautiful morning here in my nook of the metaphorical GayGamer castle. This weekend I've been discussing a few of my favorite things that aren't raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. First up was my preferred way of trading out of my games, rather than trading them in. Afterwards, I pointed you to an effortless Xbox 360 blogging service that records your play history and provides daily chuckles. Next up is a topic that is no stranger to Sunday mornings and, being the married guy I am, I don't get many chances to dedicate my Sunday mornings to tricks, towels and cheap ass. To find out why the birds are chirping a little louder and the morning seems a little brighter, keep reading.
The reason I'm so chipper this morning in light of recent events is that I was able to revive my Xbox 360 (which had been suffering from the Red Ring of Death). There is no news here, the "towel trick" has been around for quite some time, but I wanted to make mention of it for two reasons. Primarily because it works and secondly, it may give some other gamer out there a few more borrowed hours with their loved one before packing it up in brown, corrugated cardboard coffin and shipping it in for repair.
The towel trick, simply put, is insulating your stripped, RRoD'd 360 in towels and "baking it" for about 30 minutes. Afterward, remove the towels and allow the console to cool before hooking everything back up. If you are lucky, your console should boot as normal and should run again for a few more hours. This isn't a permanent solution by any means, but it should last long enough for you to get your fix.
So I've explained the "trick," the "towel," but not the "cheap ass"? Like I need to even explain that part. If you have not noticed by now that nearly every weekend I like to show a little love to Wombat and CheapyD Cheap Ass Gamer. Generally, my homage comes in the form of a plug for their regular Best Of The Sunday Ads posts, but this week I'm digging up CheapyD's old towel trick post along with the accompanying video. If you aren't familiar with Cheap Ass Gamer, it's a great community of people who are quite adept at finding great gaming deals. Hosts Wombat and CheapyD have recently added a 2007 Podcast Award to their modest mantel, Best Gaming Podcast for their CAGcast podcast.
But enough gushing already. For more details on specifics and video of the "towel trick", head right over and watch my favorite white giant shows you the ropes, step by step.
