Phantom Keyboard Crosses Over

phantomlapboard.jpg

Some development cycles just leave us scratching our heads after a while. Take the Phantom system, for example: over five years and $62.7 million have finally resulted in... a new keyboard for gamers. Admittedly, a damn cool keyboard, but this seems like an excessive buildup for a unimpressive delivery.

I got to play with the Phantom system back at E3 2004, and I remember being unimpressed with the direct-download plan they were pitching but liking the keyboard, which was wireless and featured a built in mat for the mouse to be used on. In fact, when I asked about whether or not the keyboard would be sold separately, the rep told me that it probably wouldn't be, which pained me a little. However, it seems that the keyboard is the only viable piece of equipment to actually come out of the train wreck surrounding the console, and now it's on sale:

"The Phantom Lapboard is a combination wireless keyboard, laser mouse and hard surface that makes it easy for you to work or play games from your couch, easy chair or any comfortable setting in your home or workplace. The Lapboard includes wireless technology, ergonomic design, one-touch features, and a wireless laser mouse. Its innovative design features a keyboard that rotates 360-degrees to accommodate left or right-handed users and inclines on a 22-degree angle with a hard surface below for the Phantom Laser Mouse. The Lapboard's interchangeable key-face technology is designed for game-specific and business software applications for PC or Apple Mac platforms."

Sadly, I might actually pick up one so I can have a better mouse-and-keyboard solution when working on my MacBook while I'm on the go... though the $129.95 pricetag is going to have to make me wait until after the holidays.

Umm, this doesn't look any different from the Phantom Lapboard that was "released" last christmas. Although I would be really surprised if anyone is able to purchase it.
