Unannounced Interplay MMORPG Q&A (Fallout?)

aboutlogo.jpg

Troika Games co-founder Jason D. Anderson was willing to chat with GameBanshee about the as-of-yet unannounced MMORPG (believed to be Fallout Online) he's currently heading up development on at Interplay.

Read on for an excerpt from the GameBanshee interview.

From the GameBanshee interview:

“GB: The massively multiplayer market basically comes down to World of Warcraft and then everyone else somewhere down the list, which really isn't the case for any other video game genre. How do you feel about stepping into a sector with such an odd market share distribution?

Jason: I don't worry so much about the market share distribution. I know it sounds arrogant, but I am planning on making an awesome MMO. I am trying to put a team together that shares both my enthusiasm and my vision. This question goes back to my feelings of defeatism that you see in the industry.

There are many people who say "Oh, you're making an MMO? And you really think you're going to compete with WoW?" And you would not believe how many times I have heard something along those lines... That is not the attitude I want on my team. I am playing MMOs and I am enjoying them. WarCraft is one of the games I play, but it is not the only one.

I am making a game that I truly believe in and that I am willing to pour my heart and soul into. I am not worried about WarCraft. So many people say "Why Try?", but my response is "Why not?"”

I am a big fan of Davids giving Goliaths regular beat downs. No need to be intimidated by World of Warcraft. Look at it as proof that MMORPG's can be wildly successful when carefully created. "Why not?" indeed, Mr. Anderson.

I don't understand the obsession with WoW. I'll give it credit that it does everything in the MMORPG genre well, but it doesn't innovate. It's still a big old grind with no story. To me that screams boring... hopefully this game will change it, but I don't have very high hopes, even from Jason Anderson (who I respect greatly).

I agree with you that wow doesnt have much story but neither does mario. I don't play wow for the story, I play it because it is fun. If another mmo comes along that has a story and more of what I think an mmo should be I would switch pretty quickly.

I suppose I should clarify my statement and say that stats rolling, dungeon crawling, grouping, and making a character uber doesn't appeal to me (grinding) when there's not any context or consequences for your actions, and it doesn't really appeal to most people either - taking your example: sure WoW is popular, but it's dwarfed by the people that would say Mario is fun. At least in a Mario game, the consequences of your actions are directly related to a game's endpoint, which most MMORPGs don't have in a very structured manner (and which they shouldn't, as that's how they're designed to make money). I'm not sure what exactly is required to innovate the MMORPG space, but whomever finds it and executes it well will blow everything else out of the water.

So I guess what makes WoW fun is what I definitely DON'T want in a Fallout or Fallout-derived MMORPG, but again, I'm not holding my breath.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
