Video: Final Fantasy XIII And Versus XIII Extended Trailers
If Sony wanted to sell more Playstation 3s in these last 10 days before Christmas, it would beg Square Enix to beam these trailers directly into every gamer's home. Instead, we have to settle for fairly low quality rips from some DVD Square shoved into their most recent Final Fantasy artbook. Still, we'll take it!
Although some of the footage in both trailers has been seen already, they've been significantly extended. Above is the extra crispy Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer, featuring what appears to be a sullen teenager with bit of an authority problem. I think I can see a bit of an influence from the Kingdom Hearts series in the game, although the trailer is definitely less "Mickey Mouse," more "I cut myself to feel something." After the break is the original recipe Final Fantasy XIII trailer, giving us a better look at the world, heroine, and even some gameplay. Personally, I think Milla Jovovich should sue.
Neither game has a solid release date, but both are still exclusive to Sony's big machine. Is the footage enough to kick late adopters off the fence about the PS3, or does it just appeal to those who've already bought one and are sitting at home, petting it, whispering "Soon..." over and over again?

Hmm I have a PS3 and being honest by the time the "system sellers" (MGS4 FF13+vs) come out I'm pretty sure that I will be fairly miffed that Sony are relying completely on these small amount of games to do their work for them.
Any chance of something between now and then Sony? Resistance was very good, Heavenly Sword was "ok" at best and I fail to see how this so called "super console" didn't even run Sonic the flipping Hedgehog with a decent frame rate!
Popping out 1 or 2 games per year isn't impressive i paid my money to be entertained not to wait for Sony to rely on the usual Fan-boi titles to come along and be the PS3s Halo. (I love FF and MGS I just don't think that they are God-on-a-disk)
Then again I'm looking at this from a point of view of a European which means that we get everything far later then most of the world anyway. So perhaps there is a slightly bigger PS3 selection over the pond to justify the Money : Fun but here I'm beginning to regret buy the thing at all.
Either way I'm looking forward to this very much.

FFXIII may get me to buy a PS3, but certainly not before the game comes out.
Im sorry, but how an anyone get excited by a cutscene? In all my 20 years of gaming I have never judged a game by its cutscene. I understand that everyone is excited by another FF title and usually means good things. But it in no way show ho the game is played, what graphics will be like etc etc.
Acctually I did judge a game by its cut scene once and that was FFVII. I saw the vids on an advert and went and bought it... I was deeply dissapointed after the opening scene to be faced with average graphics. (gameplay and story was awesome though).
Guess I'm just not a fan of cut scenes that dont use the game engine graphics, its lazy and distracting.
Cerberus - The DVD these videos were ripped from was a pack in with the new FF artbook entitled Cloud. I don't know if it actually has anything to do with the FFVII character or not, but that's where the watermark is from.
thedigitalpunk - I'm pretty sure that parts of the FFXIII (not versus) trailer do show some gameplay footage, although it's quick and might be enhanced. I agree that basing one's opinion of a game entirely from a cut scene is a little silly, but they can still be evocative of the mood and eventual presentation of the game, even if it won't look and play exactly as shown.
I wasn't nearly as excited about Versus before as I am now.
See YNS, I'm the opposite. As much as I hated the 'mood' of Kingdom Hearts (mopey boys being mopey in long black coats), at least the character I played as wasn't part of that mold. By Square's standards, he was downright ostentatious in fact. But this guy... and I thought the lady in FFXIII (not Versus) was generic. I think this might be a sign I am getting old.
I knew a lot of people who were upset with Square's insistence on cut scenes in their games, since it was so 'misleading', but back with the first ones to do it (7 and 8), I think it was somewhat necessary since ingame cutscenes would not have been nearly as memorable. Heck, on the PSX, the deathscene from FF7 (I cannot believe I am still censoring myself in case anyone doesn't know what I am talking about) would have taken place with characters who had no mouths!
That being said, Final Fantasy XII's prerendered cutscenes actually took me out of immersion the game had provided me with. The characters did not look quite as good as the ingame graphics engine (well, a different kind of good let us say), and the ingame graphics were perfectly capable of conveying just about everything they needed to. Larger than life scenes, mostly those involving the airships, were perfectly suited to CGI though.
Back to the trailers at hand, I'm glad to see with FFXIII (not Versus(can that be it's new subtitle?)) that they've forgone the pesky 'based on a world utilizing physics similar to our own' concept. I mean, if my character cannot spin upside down while rotating 360 degrees while also shooting every enemy around her at the same time, I don't want to play her.
...who am I kidding.
I adore Final Fantasy. But SE's unbelievable arrogance is really, really tiresome. I'll be happy when FF struggles after they've been turning their noses at their fans with their tight lips and absurdly long development times.
Not exactly on topic, but all I can think about when I see FFXIII is how I might not even be playing video games by the time it comes out. All because of SE's "we do what we want, and we don't tell you anything about it" attitude.
Stop fucking over your fans with crap spinoffs and release main franchise games consistently. Jesus, they don't have to try to innovate the industry with every game, even though they clearly think they do.
I'd so totally get a PS3 for FFXIII (and the new game being developed by the Ico team, but that's beside the point). I love the world that it seems to be set in (I wasn't too fond of 9 to 12's setting) and the battles look like Square's trying to make them exciting again; which also should be awesome. I personally don't care how long they take with it or how little info they tell us about it, just as long as it's a finished product when it's released.
These videos make me want to make out with my monitor.

Thank you for posting these videos, I think it shows that Square has learned from its past mistakes (FF12) and its trying to make the games fun and better paced. That being said, our new girl looks a lot like Lady Ashe crossed with a bit of Yuna, and our new boy took his style from Riku. Regardless, I'm excited for both games and don't mind the wait, not nearly as much as I mind getting half baked games.
So pretty... Sad as it may be, I definitely would buy a PS3 to play these games.
