Video: PS2 & Wii Get Baroque
Atlus is bringing what looks to be another fine game from its stables to North American shores. Baroque, which will be landing on the Wii and PlayStation 2 this coming February, is set in a post-apocalytpic world. My, how I love that stuff. Hearing that already piques my interest greatly. Here is what the game is all about:
You awaken to find the world in ruin, your heart beset with unexplained guilt. A cataclysm has destroyed the cities and empires of men and disfigured the spirit of humanity. In this nightmare, it falls to you to descend a mysterious tower in search of absolution. Battle merciless foes through treacherous dungeons, scour for new items to aid you in your travels, and unlock the secrets of a devastated land. You will find death in the depths, yet learn that death is not the end of the story; in the twisted world of Baroque, it is only the beginning.
In other words, when your character dies, you learn more about what's going on and what has happened. It would seem to me that it is more rewarding to die than to stay alive. ...and I'm totally cool with that. How about you? I think this has the makings of a great dungeon crawler/RPG written all over it. From I understand, the Japanese received it very well. Being a fan of Atlus and Japanese RPGs, I'll be all over this one when it comes out.

Ok, the intro by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Love her!) has sold me alone. I WANT!
I may have to give this a try. I, too, LOVE post-apocalyptic fiction, and maybe this will help me get into the Japanese style RPGs.
Not to be offensive, but it sounded really cool until I watched the trailer. It looks a lot like every other game (generic JRPG) that Atlus puts out but for Eva/ Anime fanboys (and girls).
That being said its a third party game for the Wii so of course I am going to buy it...
Knowing Atlus's reputation, it'll probably be underproduced and extremely hard to get after launch (just look at their lengthy list of hard-to-find gems).
There was another Baroque game released in Japan for both the Saturn and PS1 consoles years ago. I wonder if this is a remake or a new installment in the same game universe?
Maybe it's just because of the woman doing the voice over in the beginning, but it somehow makes me think of what .hack would look like if Atlus's Shin Megami team worked on it.
Which of course leads to the news that actually makes my heart skip a beat. A few months back, two voice actors 'accidentally' leaked they were working on two unnanounced games for Atlus, Baroque and the expansion for Persona 3. Well here is Baroque. *crosses fingers*
I don't know why, but I'm getting major ".hack" rip off vibes. I'm just not feeling this one. But then again, I'm not one for the post-apocalyptic stuff, so who knows.
While the story sounds intriguing and the anime sequences were pretty, the in-game footage was less than impressive. Definitely one to wait for reviews on.
