CES 2008: 3DV Unveils New Depth-Sensing Camera Peripheral
Motion-sensing is the latest advance in video games, made hugely popular by the great success of the Wii. It affords players a greater sense of immersion since control is dictated by gestures instead of button presses. The only real downside about the Wii remote/Nunchuk combo is the tether that connects the two controlers, thus limiting the range of movement. Sony recently made their own entry into gesture-based gameplay with the PlayStation Eye, which is great since it eliminates the need for controllers entirely. Unfortunately, the peripheral is limited to only reading movement, so a game like Wii Boxing would probably not work.
Developer 3DV is developing a camera that should marry the motion-sensing control of the Wii and eliminate the need for controllers like the PS Eye. The infrared camera will not only detect movement, but depth also, creating a peripheral that detects 3D movement of the player without the need of controllers.
The VP of Marketing and Product Management for 3DV claims the camera will retail for under $100. He did not state what kind of software would be bundled with the peripheral, only that the camera will be available later this year.
