GoldenEye XBLA Shot Dead In Its Tracks

nogoldeneye.jpg

Just a few days ago, we brought news that the wildly popular N64 first person shooter GoldenEye 007 would indeed be coming to Xbox Live Arcade with the very important addition of online play. If you were one of the many who put on their dancing shoes to celebrate the classic Bond game's release, you can take off those dancing shoes and put on your pissy, depression slippers now.

According to the latest issue of EGM, they have reported that the GoldenEye 007 port has apparently come to an untimely end. While the title had been in development by Rare (who is now owned by Microsoft) for several months, the rumor is that it is now canned. The reason? According to 1up's source at Microsoft, it comes down to licensing and (gasp!) money. Apparently Microsoft and Nintendo could not come to a licensing agreement. The sticking point in their negotiations allegedly hinged on whether Nintendo would receive a one-time licensing fee or receive a percentage of the game's sales indefinitely.

With so many people clamoring for this classic, we can only hope Microsoft listens and gets the project back on track. Right now, this breakdown in negotiations could simply be construed as just another game of "¿Quien es mas macho?" What do you think, loyal readers? Do you want to see GoldenEye 007 resurface or are you too busy with current generation titles to really notice?

Goldeneye IS the past and just isn't good anymore. 2007 was pretty much the year of the FPS, and any of those are much better than Goldeneye. What Goldeneye brings is Nostagia, and will be a game that anyone who has ever played it would want to own.

Rare is in an awkard position as being a Microsoft's developer, and a Nintendo has been. I had expected Goldeneye (and co) to be out on the Wii or the 360 but I hadn't seen this coming. But it made sense I guess.

It is sad news and I hope the game will turn up on one system or another in one form or another. Although Microsoft have produced a few games for the DS, I doubt they would want Rare to release it for the Wii VC neither. Sometimes war is bad for consumers...

I agree with you MME, GoldenEye is a product of its time and does not age well.

Maybe MS and Nintendo could make a nice compromise with this and Halo DS? Win-win, right?
