PS3 Patch For Unreal Tournament III Mods Released To Select Creators

Yesterday Epic Games sent an unknown number of Unreal Tournament III mod creators a patch that will allow them to "cook" their own mods for the PS3 version of the game. Although the ability to import PC mods was a highly touted feature of the PS3 game, mod makers lacked the ability to transfer their mods to the PS3 version of the game, and gamers have had to make due with a few popular mods that Epic converted and distributed to the PS3 community. Although this patch is just a beta and Epic has requested that the users not distribute the code to anyone else, it's a good sign that we might start to see the initial promise of the game payoff.
With the release of the patch, we also get a look at exactly what we can expect from the mods for the PS3. Maps, mutators, and gameplay modes programmed in UnrealScript are all good, as expected, as are Total Conversion mods, although for obvious reasons TCs won't replace the title screen of the game. Sadly, one thing that modders can't do at the moment is import sounds, due to a proprietary tool used to convert them for UT3. Epic holds out hope that it's something they'll be able to offer modders in the future.
I'm glad to hear about this, although I'm a little out of the UT3 loop at the moment as my PS3 has been pretty much an Uncharted (so awesome!) and Blu Ray box since the holidays. I'm sure my deathmatch itch will need to be scratched before long, so maybe by then I'll be able to take advantage of some of the mod community's creativity.
