Rumorama: Something a-SKU, PS3 80GB Getting Replaced With 120GB+

The New Model

Ok, so I managed to talk myself out of buying a PS3 until the system gets a couple more titles I want. I don't really need Blu-ray movies just yet, and I'm so very cheap. That being said, when I am trying to talk myself out of the purchase, I have a huge problem with determining which model to go for. I would ultimately like to have backwards compatibility, my PS2 is slowly dying (it makes grinding noises when the drive door closes, poor read times, etc) and but I just don't know if I need it enough to get the mega model.

Now the 80GB mega-model is getting phased out. That was the last refuge for PS2 compatibility and now it is out the door. Are we to be left with the feature crippled 40GB model alone? Rumors around the blogoweb have been saying no. Sony has been pretty positive about the 2 SKU system, and the fact that one model is going away means that another one is probably coming in. What will be in this new system you say? A "mole" had this to say:

Sony is, in fact, phasing out the 80GB PS3. Sony is going to stay with the two-SKU approach though, and the prices look to stay the same," the mole told me. I heard sirens in the background, and the mole seemed nervous. "The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller... what are you trying to accomplish with this story?

Nothing is said about anything internal. I want my backwards compatibility. I won't use it much, but the time I do get out of it will at least keep me satiated after my PS2 finally releases it's blue smoke back into the ether. Perhaps they will also be using the new cost reduced parts and such. Ultimately, I just want Sony to settle on an ultimate model so I can buy it already.

Hahaha I just did the same thing - talked myself out of buying a PS3 until something I really want to play comes out. Most likely that means Final Fantasy XIII, though Ninja Gaiden Sigma and the improved version of Eternal Sonata also look very nice. And even though I played Oblivion on the 360, I still have a strange desire to play the Game of the Year edition on the PS3. But when it comes down to it, none of the games that are available as of right now are enough for me to go get one. Now, if a price drop were to happen, and they keep the backward-compatibility, I would be much, much more tempted to get one.

So... Is it too much to hope for a White, DualShock 3, Backwards Compatible PS3 soon?

Probably. :(

The only think this New SKU every 3-6 months is doing for me is making me not want to buy each version to wait for something better. I could really go for a Dualshock 3 20GB about now, i highly doubt I'd need a ton of harddrive space.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
