San Francisco Gay Gamers Get Joystick

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure to attend the opening night of a new club night in San Francisco called Joystick. Having just moved to the city, I was of course thrilled to see that someone was throwing a video gaming party for the GLBT community. The night was a blast, with four or five game stations featuring some old school games, Sly Cooper and a Soul Calibur set-up that was crowded for the better part of the evening. The music was a nice mix of punk, rock and eighties providing a little something for varied tastes.
I got a chance to sit down with Lawrence, a Cinch employee and one of the promoters of the night to talk a little bit about Joystick. Along with his friend Eric (aka the fabulous Lucy Borden) the two have started a great new space for gay gamers in the Bay Area. Originally, the plan was to try and start a club night for the gay rock and roll set, possibly centered around skateboarding, but it was decided that it might be a bit narrow in who it would appeal to. After seeing a Tony Hawk's Proving Ground commercial, they realized that video games would be a great theme for the night. Using TVs and game systems (Atari 2600, 2 PS2s, an Xbox and a Gamecube) that were donated by friends they created a what Lawrence calls a "punk rock n' roll video game night.
The opening night was a great success and I am looking forward to attending the next one which takes place tomorrow night, Saturday Jan. 5. If you are a gay (or gay friendly) gamer who wants a chance to mix and mingle with other like minded folks on a regular basis, come down and check out Joystick. If you're really nice, I might just be willing to kick your ass at Soul Calibur.
Joystick happens on the first and third Saturday of each month at The Cinch, 1723 Polk Street, SF.
