Video: Audiosurf - Ride Your Music

Those of you paying attention to next months Independent Games Festival will recognize this one, as it's a finalist for the grand prize. Audiosurf is a rhythm game that generates the track based on... well, your tracks. It generates each level by analyzing your music files.

In Audiosurf, you race down a futuristic and colorful highway. The highway, the traffic patterns, and the scenery are all synchronized to the music you have chosen from your own collection. You earn points for clustering together cars of the same color on the highway, and can compete with others on the internet for the high score on your favorite songs.

Some songs work better than others, of course. The DragonForce track in the preview video above doesn't quite match up, but watch about six minutes in for a better example. I had a chance to play the game briefly over the weekend beta (now closed, sadly), and I was amazed and left wanting more. (I'd love to play this on Xbox Live) The game is scheduled for release sometime in February, probably around the time of the IGF awards.

I played the beta, the game is excellent. After playing it, you won't want to listen to music without it.

I'm rooting for them since they knocked me out of the finalists. I think they could very well win it too
