Disney Turns Developer

scrooge_mcduck.jpg

Well, it looks like Disney is taking over creation of its videogames from THQ by announcing plans to develop the game version of Toy Story 3 in-house, rejecting THQ's pitch for the adaptation.

It's an obvious move to keep all the money from videogame sales for themselves, with interactive entertainment proving a solid growth business. Disney is increasing its game development budget from over $180 million to $350 million annually within five years. Media companies who try their hands at game development have a spotty track record, but honestly, we're talking about a licensed game here. Nobody ever expects those to be all that good, really. Right?

Disney Interactive Studios has acquired and launched five small studios in the past three years, and hopes within two years to self-publish 80-90% of its game titles. Good luck. As THQ chief executive Brian Farrell said, "I've seen this before, and the jury is still out."

Just as long as they don't try to wrest Kingdom Hearts from Squeenix, I really don't care.
