Lair Controls Could Get An Overhaul

Lair5.jpg

Factor 5 president Julian Eggebrecht recently hinted in an interview that the SIXAXIS-controlled Lair may get a patch to enable traditional dual-analog controls. He spoke with IGN where he stated:

"If we find a chance in the future that would bring Lair to the audience which didn't get any access, that would be fantastic. I can't say anything quite yet, but there might be something in the works there. We might have a chance yet to bring those back to the table and hopefully, if that should happen, they would give the game a second chance Nevertheless, we definitely took a long look at the results and learned a couple of lessons. If you're on a platform where this whole motion control is something new and not being pitched as the main feature of the platform, you should probably give the choice between having different control schemes, there is absolutely no doubt about it."

The overwhelming negative response to insisting players use motion controls, and offering no alternative control scheme crippled the sales that it would have gone to Factor 5 fanboys. The poor sales could have also been attributed to the relatively low PS3 install base at the time, considering this was one of the first high profile games to come out after the set of launch titles. The motion controls marred an otherwise fantastic experience. The game looks gorgeous and the missions are fun and challenging. The question remains, 'Would the hardcore crowd run back to the game they shunned nearly six months ago with an overhauled control scheme?'

There's not really any need to feel sorry for us Brandon, most PS3 owners are too busy playing Uncharted, Motorstorm, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, Eye of Judgment, and Folklore (and looking forward to a lot more) to feel sorry for ourselves, but thanks for the concern :)

While I was never one of the ones that found Lair's controls problematic, it's absolutely true that they should have offered an alternate control scheme for those that did not want or like the Sixaxis controls (and it sounds like there are many of them). Would be very happy to see this patch come along.
