Lost Planet Also Requires A 5GB Installation On PS3

When it was revealed that Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 required a 5 GB, 20-25 minute install, they had to issue a set of instructions to keep gamers from just completely freaking out about it. Now the PS3 version of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition has ended up in the hands of the reviewers at PS3Style, and they claim the company is repeating history:
Capcom was kind enough to send us a pre-release copy of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for our PlayStation 3. Surprisingly, just like Devil May Cry 4, Capcom also requires a 5GB installation that can take up to 15-20 minutes. Only this time, there isn't much to read on-screen, and it's pretty much pointless to sit in front of the TV watching it install so very slowly.
So more sandwiches, Capcom? 20 minutes isn't too bad, it's just about enough time to let you run out and get a Slurpee from 7-11, or maybe you can make tiny snowmen out of crushed ice. Personally I'm more concerned about running out of space. With my 60 GB, I've got enough space to do this 11-12 times, and that's assuming I don't have any demos, PSN games, music, or movies I want to keep on the hard drive. I can delete the data from games I don't play anymore (and saved games are stored separately), but 5 GB just seems kind of chunky, and I'm still going to have to pick and choose which games are the pick-up-and-play titles I'll return to again and again. Start bringing these installs down to 1, maybe 2 GB and I'd feel like my hard drive would still have some breathing room. Or perhaps I should just bite the bullet and start looking for some cheap laptop drives for the PS3 and swap out my old one.
Lost Planet Requires 5GB Installation [PS3Style]

or maybe they could even make it optional to install it onto the hard drive like they did with resident evil outbreak for the PS2. If you did install it, you didn't have any loading times, and if you didn't it was only a ten second or so loading screen between areas.
Your PS3 and all these sandwiches are going to start making you fat.
I'm really going to giggle if the update to access your friends list in-game requires 5 gigs, too.
Start making me fat? I'd say it's about 50 lbs too late for that, so a few 20 minute sandwiches aren't going to hurt.
How did Capcom ever manage to make the games work on the 360 without a compulsory installation and why can't they do the same on the PS3? :/
I wonder if this might have to do with Blu-Ray seek times. I've read that they compare unfavorably to HD DVD, and certainly with DVD since the technology has been around for so long. Is it compulsory for PS3 games to be on BDs? It certainly looks that way. All the 360 ports are, even though several PS2 games were on CDs.
Somehow, though, I think Capcom would manage to make a cartridge load dog slow. Even their arcade machines always had loading screens. They just need to learn how to program and arrange data and spare us these cumbersome "shortcuts."
Yeah, I don't get why you'd have to install a game that played perfectly on the 360. Aren't Blu-Rays supposed to be crazy-faster?

The speculation I've read is that the blu ray laser in the ps3, while reading the massive amounts of data on the BD, loads a lot slower than than the dvd drive in the xbox 360. As a result, without installation the games would have significantly higher load times on PS3, although I'm not sure if cross platform games that don't require an install have shown this to be the case.
Hopefully as more developers get a better handle on the ps3, we'll see these installations shrink or vanish altogether.
I'm so old I remember playing small games during loading screens... then someone claimed a patent on the idea and it all had to stop.
Now we have to make sandwiches instead :-(
Man, fuck Capcom. If we all had 500GB sitting in our PS3s, I wouldn't really care, but damn. How about a goddamned choice in the matter?
I agree. A choice would be good. There will probably be a lot of people who like me don't really read whats on the box - so we buy the game, pop it in, and... we have to wait 20mins! I suppose that because it's going to happen a lot more now, we do what we always did with PC games, we prepare to wait for installation times. :(
In the UK we only have 40GB PS3, so this game takes up 25% of the harddrive? mmhhh
boy, now more than ever we should be glad for the super duper size you can get on a Blu-Ray disc! I mean really, how long before the install size jumps up on these things? two things need to happen here:
1) installs need to become optional, as let's face it, you need to do the install once. until you fill up your HDD and need to begin erasing titles to install new ones.
2) something on the development side needs to be done so that these things can be improved, whether something that takes more advantage of the HDD for buffering or what have you. let's face it, this is getting absurd.
I've only had to install a single game before on my PS3 and I don't even remember which one it was. What I don't understand is how a game as grand as Uncharted requires no 6gb install yet a game like Lost Planet does. Further reasons why I think Capcom is going down quicker now than ever.
my first ace when I try to explain people why console games are simpler to get along with than pc games is usually this: there is no installation procedure. you just put the disc in and play. well, it seems it isn't true any more.
how many more mistakes will sony do with the ps3?
it's so sad.
