Make Me Feel GOOD: Having A "Monster's Ball" With Rez HD

1.png

As a Rez virgin, I didn't have rose-tinted Dreamcast memories to guide me through a game that's a cross between Tron, the old-school 1983 Star Wars arcade game and some of the raves I went to in the early 90s that I'm relieved to be unable to remember. Now, I know that the original game didn't feature the trance vibration option with three extra pulsing controllers, but it's that feature that took my experience with Rez HD from "trippy fun gameplay" to "truly revolutionary experience."

Let's get the giggly part over with: no controllers were placed anywhere near anybody's swimsuit area - it was all very PG and adult, except maybe the part where I tried to convince my boyfriend that the Xbox 360 media remote also had rumble features. He didn't buy it.

Anyhow: I placed the extra controllers at the back of my neck and beneath each knee/thigh. Less than a minute into the game I could tell that my brain had entered a whole new kind of "zone" - I'm sure I was pumping out alpha brain waves so large that I could have been successfully brainwashed by nothing more than a gentle breeze. I couldn't stop! Testing the effect on my non-gamer boyfriend had the same effect - his eyes glazed over and he kept mashing that A button for tens of minutes longer than I'd expected.

Is this the first video game that makes you feel good physically? I've played plenty of games that make one feel good (Loco Roco) and plenty that have a physical effect (DDR, Guitar Hero, Wii Sports), but none that make me feel good in the way a massage chair makes me feel good - until Rez HD. Is this a one-off or the start of a trend? I'd love to play more games that make my pupils dilate to the size of saucers, and I'd also like to better understand the effects of a game with positive physical feedback.

If Wii Fit is a gym for gamers, then Rez HD is like a back rub and a roofie - in a wonderful way. Has anybody else felt the pulse of a new and different reason to keep mashing buttons?

Rez for the PS2 had a special "Trance Vibrator" released in Japan. it was featured in some commercials with topless men in tight leather pants. Really makes you wonder what the "Trance Vibrator" was really made for...
