Mike West Would Like To Thank The Academy - Achievements in Fable 2
I would like to say I am the biggest achievement whore in Gay Gamer castle, but I cannot. My score has been decimated by our very own TexCub. That being said, I still like to earn them, and hear developers talk about them. Earlier this week, Mike West posted a nice little community blog at Lionhead Studio about what he is planning to do with the achievements in Fable 2.
First of all, no secret achievements. This personally makes me very happy, as I like to be able to push the little button in the middle of a game and see if there is anything I can do in the middle of a game to earn some extra gamerscore, you know, when I'm not actively doing anything. Most of the rest are pretty standard, combat, collection, joke and story awards. Finally it comes down to the morality awards.
Some of us noticed something interesting when playing Mass Effect, as we knew there was an achievement for being good or evil, some of us changed our decisions because we wanted achievement points. This was really bad as it meant the 'hero' was less about our decisions and more about getting points in game. Fortunately, unlike Mass Effect, Fable has an infinite number of good and evil points lying around (as well as the other scale...Hmm, don't know if you know about that yet, think I mentioned it in my feartheboot blog) so hopefully people will play however they want, rather than push to an achievement.
He later went on to list some of the good and bad points of various games he's played, or I would assume at least have heard about.
The achievements in [Project Gotham Racing 4] were pretty. I found myself picking up a few each time I played, and that is how I hope the Fable 2 ones work. You could also pick a specific one and finish it with 5-10 mins work, whereas others still popped up in the middle of tight races.
My favorite quote is what he had to say about Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Burning Earth and it's "laughably" poor achievement list.
Ha ha ha ha...
Achievements, What Achievements? [Lionhead Community]
[thanks, Greg]

I prefer to not work for achievements, and just enjoy them when I get them. Makes me feel like I'm being congratulated for doing something
I agree with d.k.x, I prefer to just play a game and be pleasantly surprised when I get an achievement. Going after specific achievements, or all achievements in a particular game, feels too much like work.
