Playing Mass Effect DLC Means Starting Over?

masseffectbeg.jpg

I was as excited as any other Mass Effect fan to learn that there would finally be some downloadable content available starting in March. I eagerly anticipated sending Sonja Shepard back into space on another exciting mission. At least until I suddenly realized that it sounded like the downloadable mission was meant to take place in the middle of the game as you scour the galaxy for sidequests. So how will that work if you've already finished the game?

Well, it turns out that's exactly the problem. In order to play the "Bring Down The Sky" mission, you will either need to be lucky enough to still have a game save from earlier in the game when the galactic map is accessible from The Normandy. If all your saves are from the ending when the game becomes linear again, you're going to have to start over from the beginning and get yourself off the Citadel before you can access the downloadable content. Swell.

I'm not too annoyed, because I tend to cycle through saves as I play the game, so there are probably some early enough I shouldn't have to start over. But at the same time, I am kind of annoyed. Why couldn't BioWare have used the downloadable content to bridge the gap between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2: Electric Boogaloo instead of going backwards? I'd thought we were going to be able to continue the same Shepard into the sequel, so it would be nice if the experience, weapons and armor we collect during the downloadable sidequests added to the character we're going to port over. But unless you go ahead and play through to the end all over again, that's not going to happen.

What do you think?

I may be wrong on this...but from what I recall...after you beat the game...you can start again with the same saved character. You maintain the skills/levels/equipment...and could then go and do the downloadable content.

^^^ Yeah, but the complaint is that if we start over, we have to go through Eden Prime again, and the Citadel missions until we can access the DLC.

It doesn't really take too long, but it is a bit of a hassle. Well, we have until March to get a file/character ready.
