PS3 Folding@Home Clears A Million

FoldingATHomeLogo.jpg

The folks at Stanford have seen some great success with their Folding@Home program on the PS3. On September 23rd, 2007, Folding@Home reached a networked computing milestone of 1 petaflop, thus entering it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest distributed computing network. Beginning on the PC and Mac, the program has grown exponentially with the inclusion of the PS3.

Another great milestone has just been reached. SCEA announced today over 1 million users have registered with Folding@Home. Project lead and Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford Vijay Pande made a statement on behalf of the Folding team.

"Since partnering with SCEI, we have seen our research capabilities increase by leaps and bounds through the continued participation of Folding@home users. Now we have over one million PS3 users registered for Folding@home, allowing us to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, with the goal of finding cures to some of the world's most life-threatening diseases. We are grateful for the extraordinary worldwide participation by PS3 and PC users around the globe."

The difference a few unused processes can make is incalculable. If anyone out there would like to join the official GayGamer Folding@Home team, set your group to 82100 and help us fight Cancer, Parkinson's, and various other illnesses the project can help cure. For more information, head to the official PS3 Folding@Home page, and see how you can make a difference.

For those of you who keep that PS3 running 24/7 (like me), or who can afford to, or who do it without realizing it, there is a great way to contribute those extra cycles without having to think about it.

Set the Autostart option for Folding@home so that the program starts automatically. You can set it to automatically start after 10, 20 or 30 minutes of idle time. Mine's set for 10. So, when I'm not playing a game or watching a blu-ray, I just go back to the main PS3 menu and shut the TV off. After 10 minutes, the Folding@home auto-starts, and more numbers start crunching.

Congrats Dr. Pande! We went down to Stanford a few months ago to interview Dr. Pande and his crew. Check out the video if you want to learn more about Folding@Home and join our team! Team DL.TV #57391

I was wondering if anywhere else on your station account thingy it shows what Folding Team you're on, as I have a few co-workers on my friends list thingy, and I'm not exactly "out" at work (it's not exactly the kind of workplace you -want- to be out in :3)
