They'll Make You Cry A Thousand Oceans - Bandai's Crying Game
I've been trying to steer clear of talking about games that are most likely not going to see the light of day in the US, especially ones that are localization heavy. This one is an exception. After losing our favorite crybaby on a popular TV show last night (anyone else glad to see him go?), it only seems fair that I should report on a way to bring those tears back to your lives.
Namco-Bandai announced 99 no Namida, or "99 Tears" for the Nintendo DS. The concept? Make you cru.. It's not so much a game as a book on DS, 99 books to be more precise. The "player" is in a town where people have forgotten to cry, and after discovering a store called Namida no Moto Arimasu (or "Source of Tears"), the player is encouraged to read at least one story a day.
Each story is crafted in cooperation with Waseda University professors to illicit an emotional response. Each story will move you progressively closer to those salty drops in hopes of creating a therapeutic effect for players. It is suppose to be good for you to cry after all.
Will this see the US? Most likely not, and it defiantly would not be considered terribly masculine. While this would be a great stocking stuffer for mom, I'm sure she would appreciate the Titanic, Beaches and Steel Magnolias extended directors cut box set just as much. You may want to throw in a copy of Bambi and Old Yeller in there too.
