Video: Makin' Waves In Tekken 6

The upcoming Tekken 6 for the PS3 will be using quite an impressive piece of "natural environment middleware" to simulate natural hydrodynamics while characters are fighting in water. The Octave Engine pictured in this video is the first piece of software to dynamically simulate hydrodynamics on a home console. The flexible engine can also simulate other environmental dynamics such as sand deformation and the changing sky.

We've seen some pretty water in games, take a look at Uncharted for instance, but this is a league of it's own. Watch as the water reacts to the force of the collision of the characters, and makes splashes and waves from the impact. I hope this becomes a new environmental benchmark for games.

Seriously? I mean cmon, we've all seen bitmap splashes that looked more realistical than that. Plus, the characters themselves still don't interact with the water at all, they probably just push an invisible block around that displaces water almost instantly. This is *not* hydrodynamics.
