ESA Announces Scholarship For Female And Minority Students
Accommodation, food, bills and of course the high price of video games, top it off with the cost of education at university level, how is a student supposed to survive? The Entertainment Software Association (or ESA for short) might just have the solution for all of you aspiring to enter the lucrative games industry.
The ESA has started up a new undergraduate scholarship program, targeting women and minority groups. It's rather vague, but I have the feeling that includes people in the GLBTIQ community. In addition to being female or a minority, there's a few other criteria that you'll need to satisfy:
Applicants to the ESA Foundation Computer and Video Game Scholarship Program must be:* Minority students or women,
* Pursuing degrees* leading to careers in Video Game Development,
* Enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited four-year college,
* And have a grade point average of 2.75 or above on a 4.00 scale (or its equivalent).
Successful applicants are awarded $3000, with 15 scholarships up for grabs (making a grand total of $45 000). Sadly it's for residents of the USA only, so others will have to find some other way to pay tuition. You have until 11:59pm CentralTime April 15 to apply.
It's great to see groups supporting the breaking down of the "lonely straight nerd" stereotype that many people consider the video game development industry to be, particularly in the mainstream. And more women making games is always a awesome thing. It would be great to even see some GGer's get awarded!

I really doubt if "minority" refers to anything other than racial minorities...
