First "Pay To Play" Games Released, In WiiWare Form

dsc04659.jpgDuring the rush of GDC, you might remember Nintendo's shock announcement for expanding it's currently free online service (otherwise known as the Wi-Fi Connection) to the "pay to play" market, al a Xbox Live. It caused quite a stir, and details other than the replacement of the usual blue logo with a red one and payment via wii points, was scant.

With the introduction of WiiWare this week in the land of the rising sun, Nintendo has decided to roll in the above mentioned service using one of it's most anticipated downloadable titles: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King (such a long title!), while also introducing one of the most wanted wii features: downloadable content.

The screenshot you see before you is apparently what comes up before downloading the game, informing you that you'll have to sink extra points for "additional data or services". What the full extent of this is, I'm not sure, but according to Siliconera, this entails extra content such as costumes, buildings and even new races to name a few things. It's already the most expensive game on the launch roster (1500 points), so it's frustrating to see you have to buy stuff with your hard earned points that could've been included in the final product.

Despite square's usual obvious gouging, it excites me to see the concept of DLC finally fully realized on the wii. Hopefully, they'll be able to extend this to games such as Guitar Hero and the upcoming version of Rock Band.

Will you buy DLC for FFCC:MLAK or any other WiiWare game (bomberman comes particularly to mind)? Let us know in the comments!

Probably not, unless it's really good DLC. We're talking "Shivering Isles" good, here.
