Indie Music Label Releases Comp For Audiosurf

vinyl.jpg

In a blog post on their homepage, Indie label Asthmatic Kitty announced the release of Music for Videogames v.1, a selection of tracks designed to complement the recently released Audiosurf. The compilation is free and available for download now.

Music for Videogames v.1 marks the inauguration of Asthmatic Kitty Records into the world of videogames. This fifteen track compilation is unique in that we painstakingly combed through our web of friends to find songs that represent not only high quality music, but also intensive and challenging gameplay experiences for the independent videogame, AudioSurf.

For those unaware, Audiosurf is a racing/puzzle game that turns music from your own MP3 or CD collection into racetracks and obstacles, meaning every song presents a different experience. Rather than some clumsily tossed together jumble of free tracks and leftovers, more than half the songs on Music for Videogames v.1 are previously unreleased, and it spans acts from four other independent labels, including Anticon and Sounds Are Active. Acts on the comp include Fantastic Mr. Fox, Seth Kaufman, Mansbestfriend, and Asthmastic Kitty label founder Sufjan Stevens.

Being of the Apple persusion, I've yet to try out Audiosurf, but I love the idea of indie record labels actively supporting music games beyond the more corporate structures of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Gamers with a Windows PC can get the game now via Steam for $9.95. Although the group of songs is designed for an excellent Audiosurf experience, "changing the feel from a puzzle game to frantic hyper-racer with each track," you don't need the game to enjoy the music, so feel free to check the songs out at the link below. Just pretend to drive a fake car while you're listening to them. Vroom! See the full tracklist after the break.
