In-Game XMB Comes This Summer

During a statement to promote the sales of the PS3 SCEE head honcho Ray Maguire let a tasty morsel drop concerning in-game XMB with the upcoming firmware 2.4.
"Achieving one million PS3 sales faster than both PSOne and PlayStation 2 is even more gratifying considering PS3 is a premium product introduced at a premium price. Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios. I'd personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey."
In-game XMB support is no surprise at this point. Previously a mystery graphic appeared on the Official PlayStation site (pictured above) that mentioned in-game communication. This is a feature 360 users have enjoyed for quite some time, so it's only natural that Sony develops the same technology for their platform. Always gotta keep up with the Jones'.

Not to be jerky, but I'm still curious as to why this wasn't up from the get go? I mean, it seems like a pretty basic (and important) feature to be able to access the XMB in-game. Sony seems to want to build up excitement over the release of a feature that seems to me should have been included from day one.
^ TexCub Branded Truth.
For a machine marketed with a heavy focus on being a multimedia hub/center it has Wii-like levels of media integration. In-game XMB is a start, but it should have been there from launch.
yup. should've been there from the start.
thing is, machine and firmware updates were / are designed by the Japanese side of Sony who, even according to Phil Harrison, still didn't get the social aspect of gaming till recently.
looks like, even though the rest of the world has been screaming for it, SCEJ just didn't think it was important...till now...
