SXSW 08: Spector Says Disney Has Big Plans For Austin
SXSW Interactive and Screenburn have been fun events so far. Screenburn, now only in its third year, seems to have great promise at becoming a major event in the gaming industry in the future. One of the panels that was directly related to Screenburn this year was City of Games: Inside Austin's Developerscape. While the panel was focused on the topic of Austin's past, present and ever so bright future as a game developer's city, Warren Spector let loose that Disney has some very big and special plans for Austin. Sadly, he could not go into any more detail other than that.
Could this be a Disney plan to put a gaming division down in my backyard? I can only assume so since I highly doubt this country needs another Disney World/Land. Disney Interactive Studios have acquired a few developers in recent years. Would they perhaps open a new one or focus their division on this city? Jeebus only knows, but with so many other developers already located here, including the likes of Red Fly Studio/Gamecock, Midway, Sony Online Entertainment and BioWare, another big player would be a very welcome addition to the other big boys and the numerous petite developers.
