Video: Alone In The Dark "Epic Haunting Gameplay" Trailer
For a series that hasn't had a decent entry in a decade, Atari's pulling out all the stops for Alone in the Dark. In parts of the trailer above, the game looks like Silent Hill 2 crossed with Die Hard. Hopefully the result combines atmospheric terror and garish explosions in a good way, and doesn't just replace subtlety with "look, you can set everything on fire!"
We're in a bit of a lull as far as horror games go - although Condemned 2 just came out last week, Resident Evil 5, Silent Hill 5, and Fatal Frame 4 are all waiting on release dates. By June, when Alone in the Dark is set for release, horror fans will probably forgive a little over-exuberance. I will say that although I usually grimace when I'm forced into playing vehicle levels in adventure games, driving through a disintegrating New York City does have a certain appeal to me.
As a warning, the sound in the trailer seems to be a little louder than normal, so you may want to turn your speakers down a little bit. I guess that doesn't really bode well for the subtlety thing, huh?

Wow, this actually looks really good! There damn well better be a soundtrack, that music was gorgeous.
I'd have to disagree, I thought the music was obnoxious overkill, the main character looks really fake, and overall the game looks average. Not impressed.
The music was a little annoying for some reason, but I'm still excited about it. OBVIOUSLY, Eshto b' hatin', yo! lol, in all seriousness though, I was trying to explain what this game was to my friend and all he remembered "Isn't that the game where you set rats on fire?" At the moment, why yes. Yes it is. They need to showcase some of the OTHER horror elements so far, because as it stands, the solution to everything is either set it on fire, start a fire, or make fire. ~__~
I think as technical limitations begin to pale, games challenge the gamers mind less and less. I remember playing the hell out of (but never finishing) AoD 2. A lot of the horror actually came from being a) alone (sic!) b) being lost and c) the scary characters. A lot of that, of course, was in my mind, since the enemies were all pretty low-poly. I loved that. More abstract games plz!
