Comment Round Up: What's Your System Seller?

buymenow.jpg

Last week I asked a very pertinent question to you, our readers, about system sellers. There is often talk about this game or that being a system seller and by system seller I mean a game that makes you want to buy a certain console even if there might not be any other games on it that you want to play. The comments were a little divided, but for the most part it seems that people generally do but a console for one particular game especially if there is the promise of other things coming down the pipe. Here's what some of you had to say on the subject.

Dunks: I remember playing Rareware's Goldeneye at a friends house and being so blown away by the pure fun of the single player campaign and four person multiplayer that I went and bought a Nintendo 64 with Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye the next weekend.
Nexus: I wouldn't buy a console for a single game. I have all consoles of the latest gens, but I've bought all of them for quite a few games. I still haven't got the PS3 even though I really want to play Folklore, but now that there's a bit more out for it I think I might get me one.
Shin Gallon: I've bought consoles for one game before: PSX for Street Fighter Alpha, Saturn for Alpha 2 and Vampire Hunter (Night Warriors), Gamecube for the Resident Evil remake, 360 for Dead Rising, PS3 for Ratchet and Clank Future and MGS4. Granted, I always end up getting a lot of games for my consoles, but it's usually 1 game that really gets me to go "I have to own that".
James Neill: I've always maintained a personal rule that I don't buy a console or handheld until 3 or more games I want are available for it. Of course I've broken this rule repeatedly. I got a GBA specifically for Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and the Wii for Twilight Princess. I guess I'm just too trusting of Nintendo to deliver quality titles in the future. At the other end of the spectrum lies the PS3. I will be buying one the day Final Fantasy 13 is released, but amusingly I already own 7 PS3 games that are just sitting on my self with nothing to play them on because I'm a huge bargain hunter.
Dreamcaster: I didn't think system sellers were something I'd succumb to, but now that I think back, oh my.

Gamecube- Eternal Darkness/too many Irish car bombs pre-shopping. Does that count as a system seller?
PS2- Tales of the Abyss
PS3- Folklore, FFXIII
Wii- Twilight Princess
Dreamcast- Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue
DS- Hotel Dusk
GBA- FFTA

Thankfully I ended up getting more out of every system, except maybe the PS2. I watched a significant other sit in front of that thing more than I care to remember, so when I had my own I didn't really want to use it. Ever.

Jennifer Diane Reitz: Patapon was what got me to buy a PSP, and the promise of Little Big Planet is the only reason I own a PS3. Other than Pixeljunk Monsters, there just isn't much else I like on the machine. I got my Xbox360 because it has quite a few games I wanted to play - Mass Effect for example. But what sold me was Earth Defense Force 2017, originally. For the Wii, it was Zelda, pure and simple, along with the promise of Mario. The DS was pretty much just an upgrade for a machine I have always loved - the Gameboy. A Nintendo handheld is pretty much standard purse-fill for me.
mintoncard: I saw the television trailer for BioShock. The next day I bought an XBox 360 and the limited edition set for BioShock. Within the first 5 minutes of game play, I knew my money was well-spent. No regrets at all.

It's pretty interesting to hear people's stories and these are only a few of the fifty plus comments we got on this story. So it would seem that the concept of system sellers is a very real thing indeed. Many gamers will think nothing of dropping a large wad of cash to play that one game they really, really love.

Oh my god, I've been quoted on the front page, and by none other than Fruit Brute. I guess I know where the expression 'giddy like a schoolgirl' comes from now. Just wish I had an epic sounding username to post under. To expand on my earlier post, I bought the PSP very early on because it met my '3 games or more' rule, but every game that I bought in the first 12 months or so was absolute rubbish. I have almost traded in more PSP games than I currently own (about 15)

And Personally, I see nothing wrong with people buying systems just for one game. I'll say it's how it always was and will be! It makes the gamer unique in a way.

Heh. I bought the Ace Combat 6 flight stick bundle on day one even though I don't own a 360 and new that it was a timed exclusive (but where the hell is the info on the PS3 version?). Guess I'm a sucker for franchises. Bought a PSP just for FFT and Crisis Core.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
