Epic Games Hates Your Wii.

Sometimes I get the impression that in order to run a game studio you have to be a bitchy queen. Maybe it's just Epic Games, I don't know, but Mike Capps has once again given the five across the face to the Nintendo Wii.
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there's a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I'm still waiting for that one game that makes me play it.
That's right, he doesn't like it. Personally, I think he is just upset that he can't port his latest Unreal Tournament installment. Massive market saturation and his games won't run on it, that's likely to make anyone green. I know that would make me a little angry if I was out to make the benjamins.

He's absolutely right.
I've owned a Wii since last summer...and it now sits hooked up to the television in the GUEST BEDROOM...with Wii Sports and Wii Play standing with it.
There hasn't been a single game that has come out besides "Super Mario Galaxy" that has inspired me to rent or purchase in months...
I rented "Super Smash Bros." brawl and my Wii made horrible clicking and groaning sounds that no game console should ever make.
The only reason we even keep it is because my boyfriend claims he wants to go finish a few of the VC games we've paid for.
so the wii is making money.. how is this bad again? or are people jealous *shrugs* i still play my Wii a lot and when mario kart comes out... my 360 will start building up dust
I agree he's being bitchy. I used to have so much respect for Epic but recently less so. I think they don't have enough creative ideas to create a game that isn't just about graphics. I doubt that even if he can port UT to the Wii, not many people will buy it for that console (it's more a 360/PS3 purchase to take advantage of HD?).
I disagree that people are turning it off after 2 months. I concede that there are some people, the Wii doesn't get as much usage - but for me and most of my friends, we are still playing as much Wii as we did when we first purchased it over 1/2 year ago.
I'm not saying the Wii is the best console, but to completely dismiss it is just ignorance. He says 'I'm still waiting for that one game that makes me play it'? What??!! Don't they create games? Make a game that he WOULD play instead of bashing the console.
Is it sad that I have that copy of EGM on my shelf?
I actually agree with him. I haven't played it in over 5 months. I actually put it away in my closet. For me there hasn't been a game on Wii that I was REALLY excited about.
Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports were fun, and the VC is cool, but it doesn't have enough staying power with me. Truth is I haven't played a knock-my-socks-off game on the Wii.
It doesn't sound like he's dismissing it completely to me; he's just saying that he hasn't been excited about a game YET. If one comes out, he'll (and I'll) probably change his (and my) tune.
"Personally, I think he is just upset that he can't port his latest Unreal Tournament installment."
^ I 100% agree. The truth is that Epic's audience is almost the polar opposite of Wii's. I'm sure they're a little miffed that there is a substantial portion of the market that Epic cannot tap within the foreseeable future. This isn't just Epic either. This same situation is playing out across a lot of companies that wrote the Wii off until E3 '06 when they saw people wait in line for hours to play it. Big names are still playing catch up.
It's interesting that he talks about how the Wii doesn't have any games he wants to play. I mean, if not as if he is president of a games company with a powerful engine that ran on last gen hardware and could make games that would be virtually uncontested in his company's genre of choice. Oh wait...
Seriously, if Epic ported their Xbox1 engine to Wii, with updated artist tools, it would become the middleware solution that a lot of Wii developers dream of. So many people know Unreal Editor. They would make an easy killing.
But the fact that gaming is now large enough to support two drastically different consoles/audiences is not something to insult or belittle with petty name calling. This should be celebrated! This is a healthy sign that there is room for all kinds of games and they they can appeal to a wider audience than emotional 15 year olds with delusions of Space Marines.
I fully agree with his statements. All of my friends (and I) have this problem. Anybody I know with a system other than the Wii never turns their Wiis on anymore.
Chris hit the nail on the head.
Wow. so after reading comments here and over at joystiq, I figured this guy was being a complete douche and going out of his way to flame the wii, but honestly he didn't seem very mean at all. I'll admit comparing it to a virus is a little mean, but it's not like he said 'EVERYONE HATES THIS WII,' because right after that he talks about people who do like, and even praises nintendo some. I think most of you are just having overdramatic hissyfits D:
Yeah my Xbox 360 and my PlayStation 3 are on much more than my Wii usually. That is of course other than SSBB and Okami.
I feel the same way, I'm waiting for the one game to come out, for ALL the systems.
Although I have a Wii, Xbox360 and Playstation3 I'm still waiting for that special game for each system. Until then I'll stick to my MMORPGs thank you. I'm really disappointed with Virtual Console also, they keep dishing out pathetic titles.
I dunno, I'm of the mind that you should play what you enjoy, and not really be concerned with stuff like this. I have my Wii, and I use it a lot.
My old roomie had the 360 and I used that a lot too. I'm still waiting on my HD console purchace, to so what happens with PS3 VS 360.
I also gotta say, Epic may make good games, but it's nothing new or innovating, and it does sort of reflect badly on him for me.
Also bold statements without any proof. He's in the field that's nice, but he has stats for every Wii owner? No.
