Sims Online Finally Being Put Down

simsonline.jpg

Well, technically, The Sims Online isn't shutting down. EA Land is. Several weeks ago The Sims Online was rebranded to EA Land in what I can now only assume was an attempt to avoid headlines like "The Sims Online Finally Being Put Down" when they turned off the server. The EA Land blog post says it all.

It is with mixed emotions that today we are announcing the EA-Land experiment will soon draw to a close. Since 2002, EA-Land / TSO has attracted a very special group of players (of which you are one) and we certainly appreciate your participation in the EA-Land community. The lifetime of the game has drawn to an end, and now we will be focusing on new ideas and other innovative concepts in the games arena. We'd like to thank everyone who has taken part in this online community as a unique experience in the virtual world.

The Sims Online launched in 2002 but never really took off. In fact, early on in it's life it was dogged by stories of child prostitution and sadomasochistic subcultures. (which is kind of impressive for a game with no sex or violence in it). In the end though, it was basically still The Sims, so it meant leveling up skills and buying furniture, only now with a chat room added onto it. It did break some ground in virtual worlds, ushering in games like Second Life. (I'll leave it to the reader to decide if that's a good thing)

Ditto on the beta. Had some good times. Though it did cause my GPA to drop a bit back in college.

hmm... that is kinda suspicious that they really did just relabel the game recently. You would think they would at least give it a good shot under the new name?

It was a good try though. The SIMs really does seem to be well suited to the MMO genre, but I guess it just couldn't find its niche.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
