Teenage Zombies At Nintendo World!

teenzombies.jpg

Hey gang! Didja miss me? Long story short, my computer's fan started blowing like it was getting ready for takeoff, so it's been in the shop for a better part of the week. The upshot is I ended up having to buy a new one anyway, so I could've done that on Sunday. But I'm back in business now, and I've got these pictures from Saturday I've been dying to share with you all week!

The Nintendo World Store in New York City hosted on Saturday, April 12, a launch party for the fabulously titled Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys. And not only were the titular undead characters on hand in a store festooned with macabre decorations, the event benefited Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. That's me with the Teenage Zombies above (those tentacles were a bit forward, I must confess), and I've got more pictures and impressions after the jump!

The Teenage Zombies held court at the entrance to the store, where visitors could have their photo taken with them. I ended up scanning the Polaroid the employee took, as the shot he snapped with my actual camera was relatively awful. They also handed out free gift bags to everyone, which contained information on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC organization, a sticker, balloon and T-shirt for the game. The woman told people the sizes were purely random, so I guess it was only dumb luck I got a shirt that would fit me.

All the DS demo stations featured copies of Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys to try out. I gave it a shot, and quite enjoyed the macabre sense of humor. You control three different teenage zombies, each with their own specific skill. The round one has tentacles that are quick to take out enemies, the girl has quite a reach, and the little boy can lay on his skateboard to fit through narrow pathways. By tapping each of their coffins on the touch screen, you can swap between them at any time on the upper screen to get past the obstacles in your way. In addition to picking up random body parts along the way that are used to ultimately complete an entire corpse, the brains dropped by killing the enemy Brain Thingys are eaten by the zombies to regain health. I liked that. Unfortunately, I must confess in the interest of full disclosure, even though all purchases of the game during this event benefited Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, I passed on buying one. It's ultimately just a platformer after all, and I'm just not particularly good at them.

You'll notice in the photo gallery that the DS demo table as well as pretty much every other flat surface in the store was scattered with bones and skulls, in keeping with the theme. And then Ignition Entertainment presented Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC with a check for $10,000, and a gang of Big and Little Brothers posed with the zombies and each other. I still kind of don't get the connection between a DS platformer about teenage zombies fighting alien brain creatures and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC organization, but there you go. Can't argue with doing good deeds, people!
