The Nitty-Gritty On Sonic Unleashed

Image of Super Sonic with Text Stating "Don't Fail Me"

In case you haven't noticed lately, we here at GayGamer Castle are both enthusiastic and apprehensive about the purported old school Hedgehog throw-back that is to be Sonic Unleashed.

While these details do little to assuage my dread over Sonic's metamorphic abilities (What if he morphs into Shadow the Hedgehog? *shudder*), it does list one very important trait: Sega has effectively cuts any ties that Sonic Unleashed may have to the abortion that was Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Read on, fellow gamer, and dream of what may be:

- Originally penned to be Sonic Adventure 3

- Has no/little relation to previous 3D sonics, including 2006 and Secret Rings

- The power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds are misused by Eggman and something changes inside Sonic's body.

- Sonic heads around the world, with various different realistic locations.

- No direct mechanics from Wii's Sonic Rings, but uses a move known as "quick step" to allow for fast movement left or right.

- Sonic Boost allows for a quick boost in speed (much like in Secret Rings) by collecting rings throughout the course, as well as a Sonic Dash move.

- Sonic's classic moves like spin and homing attacks make a return.

- The game turns from day to night at times, day seeing Sonic in his usual form and at night players will slow down and manipulate objects...

- In Unleashed players will also use the Nunchuck in some form (presumably for analogue movement)

- New robot creatures developed by eggman, some darker elements and some colossal beasts (one would be about 7m tall)

- Developed from scratch to be a completely new take on Sonic.

Sounds interesting, but I'm still apprehensive.

The questions/comments that popped in my head:

1. If it has no relation to any 3d Sonics and was penned as Sonic Adventure 3, then...what?

2. Most likely, what changed in sonics body is that at night, he turns into a druggie, which explains why he sounds like he loses some of his power and time slows down so you can manipulate the environment o.o

3. Why in the world did they ever consider removing the iconic Sonic spin?!

4. I think I'm more nervous than excited about hearing this is developed to be a new direction for Sonic. I really think it would have been great for the game to have just been a return to the classic 2d side-scrolling Sonic games. New Super Mario Bros was a perfect example of how 2d games can still succeed, and I'm sure it would be a blast to play on Wii. They wouldn't even need remote waggling!

Cautiously pessimistic. What would be perfect is if this were a hi-res 3D console version of the Sonic Rush series.

Dear Sega,

I know that you enjoy making Sonic games. The character is fun, some of the art is pretty, I get it. But you see, the thing is, that games themselves have not been fun to play since Sonic 3 for Genesis. Sonic Rush was a step in the right direction, but still lacks the magic of the older games.

So how about giving Sonic a few years off? Let the team chill out on another project and get back the creative juices that made Sonic 1 so awesome. And when you do bring Sonic back, drop the "friends," the werewolf gimmicks, the voice actors, the still flawed 3d gameplay so you can focus on returning Sonic to simple/fun gameplay.

Your fan,
game-boi

PS: I'm still super bitter about the lack of *real* Phantasy Star sequel.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
