Video: Resident Evil 5 Producer Interview
There's been a lot of controversy brewing over Resident Evil 5, what with it being set in Africa and shooting a whole lot of Africans. In this interview with RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi, he talks you through a lot of the ideas behind the story, graphics, characters, weapons and gameplay of the title. They wanted to explore the birth of the virus, so they decided to set the game in Africa, which is the birthplace of humanity. They're using the gameplay mechanics from RE4 as their template, but updating it in unspecified ways, including expanding on the QuickTime action button moments. Takeuchi also says that the game will tie into the Resident Evil CGI movie that's currently in development, and will explore the missing 10 years of Chris Redfield's life. Well, judging by the guy's appearance, nine of those years were spent in a gym!
I really hope the controversy doesn't overshadow this game, because it looks pretty awesome. Especially the way the developers are using light and shadow to enhance the fear. Those few seconds when you go from the bright African sun into a dark room and you can't see a thing until your eyes adjust are awfully unsettling! Let's hope people hold off until they've actually played the game. It's like people protesting a movie before they've seen it. I can't really respect their opinion because it's uninformed. But that's neither here nor there. This video's all about getting a few more nuggets of information out of the producer of one of the biggest games in the pipeline. Enjoy!

Those missing nine years were with me...
A boy can dream right.
Is shooting Africans in Africa putting the black man down?
Africans aren't offended, white people are looking for reasons to self loathe.
I think we heard this same thing about RE4 and shooting the Portuguese.
what disgusts me, is this game wouldn't be racist if we were killing Italians, Frenchmen, or British folk. it's only racist if their skin is darker than pasty.
prefer Leon to Chris but....
the game looks really good
and i agree with fillerbunny9 in that no one would call it racist if only killing europeans
"but oh god no its africa" so it has to be racists i can already see the uninformed press statements
