Can A Game Get You To Stop Smoking?

smokingds.jpg

You've gotta give Nintendo credit for branching out into new genres for games, but I think this might just be the oddest one I've ever seen. Wii Fit will whip you into shape, Brain Age will make you smarter, My Spanish Coach will teach you a foreign language, and now apparently they're going to get you to stop smoking. Ubisoft announced today that they will be publishing the Nintendo DS game Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking, based on the best-selling book.

The game, due out in November 2008 will be an interactive of the method used in the associated book, DVD and clinics. Apparently, the success rate is 90% after three months and 50% after 12 months. Players will input the details of their smoking habits and select their own Allen Carr's Easyway coach to take them through the process of quitting.

"Ubisoft's creative team has worked hard to deliver a game that successfully communicates Allen Carr's Easyway method via play," said Christian Salomon, vice president of worldwide licensing at Ubisoft. "The player experiences a truly interactive engagement with the game through which he or she learns that it can actually be enjoyable to quit smoking."

The press release didn't give any details about how this is going to be an actual game or anything, but I'm leaning towards a cigarette butt crushing mini-game — the touch screen's a natural for that. Seriously, though, if this game can get even one person to quit smoking and save them from respiratory problems or lung cancer, it's worth it.

WOW, I actually thought that was a joke but it's for serious ;)

I used the Allan Carr's book after failed attempts at quiting with the patch and trying to stop cold turkey with no plan to help with the urges. Mind you it wasn't perfect but the book defintely helps put you in the right frame of mind quiting and it keeps your hands busy so I think the game/book should be an interesting sell.
