Just In: BioShock Movie A Go, Verbinski To Direct

bigdaddymovie.jpg

Ripped right from the pages of Variety: Universal Studios has signed a deal to turn last year's hit BioShock into a film. This has been hinted at for a while but this is the first time we've gotten actual confirmation. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski has been tapped to direct and John Logan, who penned The Aviator has been tapped to write the script.

Take 2's Strauss Zelnick is cutting quite the deal that will ensure that BioShock gets made and doesn't get axed like the doomed Halo movie. Ken Levine is also currently being consulted although it is unsure whether he will have a hand in the final product. I truly pray that he does and that BioShock turns out to be just as fine a film as it was a game. I will be on the edge of my seat to see what they do with this one and crossing my fingers that it doesn't turn out to be another Blood Rayne... or another Resident Evil... or another Silent Hill... or another (fill in the blank)

Noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Ok, I am not sure whether I am really happy about this or terrified!
I always get a little scared when I hear that a game is being made into a movie (BloodRayne anyone?), so I guess I'll hope to be proven wrong about this one....

There wasn't anything terribly bad about Silent Hill. Could've used a half-hour cut from it though. I'd like to see the original one before they decided to release the director's cut instead because I bet it didn't have that embarrassing Matrixy moment at the end with all the white.

If it is at least a bit close to Silent Hill it will be a great movie. However, I am more into the Castlevania and Clocktower Movies... but I am already sure the Castlevania one will be a failure, since Mr. Anderson (Resident Evil) is working on that one >.

Am i the only one who loves the Resident Evil Movies? I also thought the Silent Hill Movie was pretty good as well...

John Logan penning the screenplay, if that's true my hopes shoot through the roof, the guy is on terrific form, penning the awesome Aviator and the screenplay for the fantastic Sweeney Todd.

Oh, he also did Gladiator and Star Trek: Nemesis, the guys resume reads like a list of films that should be in everyones DVD collections, the ethos is in very, very safe hands as a screenplay. Definetely one of the best on the go right now, fantastic choice.

Direction however, I love POTC, it's sequels aren't great, I still feel Verbinski is largely untested as a creative director, it's a good choice, it'll be flashy and steampunk definetely, Verbinskis other films Weather Man and The Ring are utterly terrible though, so outside Disney I wonder if he can cut it.

Still there's far, far worse combinations they could have gone with, I am cautiously optimistic, I can guarantee the screenplay will be excellent, if the direction can match it is the problem.

So, very wild aimless speculation, whose playing Andrew Ryan?.. My throw out name, John Hurt.

Blood Rayne?

OMG.. Did you really compare Verbinski to Uwe Boll?

Damn..

Well, it sounds like they have some pretty good talent on board. And what's with this bashing of Silent Hill and Resident Evil? Silent Hill was good and so was the first Resident Evil (as was the third actually, though the second was utter garbage).

Kick ass, Gore Verbinsky rocks! The first POTC is one of my all time favorite movies! I also love The Weatherman, and The Ring was pretty good too.

Verbinsky is NO worthless hack like Paul WS Anderson or Uwe Boll. This won't be Mortal Kombat / Resident Evil or House of the Dead / Bloodrayne. And as for Silent Hill, I liked it.

It's interesting that a "real" director like Verbinsky is directing it (I liked his americanization of The Ring, hated Pirates), but I'm not really all that interested in returning to Rapture. What made Bioshock interesting was where the player was given choice and where they they were not. It will certainly be difficult to replicate that on film.

Also, I'm not too excited to see Bioshock's player character given a face. And speaking of faces, why do I get the feeling that all the little sisters are going to become one character similar to Newt from Aliens?

I also didn't see much wrong with Silent Hill. It was really faithful to the feeling of the town, the remixes of the sh2 songs was subtle but good, and If I wanted the story to remain exactly the same as the game I could have just played SH1.

Yeah, If the Bioshock movie is anything to the game like the SH movie was to SH, I'll be very happy. I can only hope they favor talented small name actors than big name money makers though...

I think it'll be cool to see the rise and fall of Rapture (which I'm sure we would see in flashblacks that play out the story told by the tape recorders in the game) in movie form. But I sincerely hope the writer finds a way to avoid presenting the hero completing the "missions". Bioshock presents more than enough solid material for a truly good film (not just a truly good video-game-film), as long as it doesn't stupidly try to stick too close to the game.

People really have a tendancy to randomly bash game movies.
Yes, a lot of them are bad. But some of them are actually quite good.
The first Mortal Kombat and the first Resident Evil were great movies.

I'm a little afraid... I think that the sad truth is that video games just don't transfer to movies very well. Silent Hill is probably the best video game movie that's ever actually made it to the big screen, but it was still a disappointment. We can hope, though, that the director will take the material seriously... cuz, seeeirously, Bioshock is just the sh*t.

The thing that made Bioshock (the game) great, was that feeling of discovery. Of being placed into a world that was both nostalgic and scary at the same time. Nothing in the game was spoon fed to you. Most all of the back story was revealed using audio-recordings, signage, artwork, Atlas, and the crazy ramblings of the splicers that were out to get you. Then you have the entire moral dilemma with the little sisters and the big daddies.

I've played the game multiple times, and have gotten choked-up at the ending every time. For me, Bioshock was the first game that became more of an experience than a simple FPS. Most games strive to become more than the sum of their parts, and I think Bioshock far exceeded that intent. I just hope that the movie also strives to become more than just another "game to movie" adaptation.

Oh also, I loved the Silent Hill movie. I think the first Resident Evil movie set a good stage for future stories, but they missed the mark with RE 2 & 3. It's as if they ran out of "clever" for the last two.

I honestly thought resident evil was a pretty good movie but maybe thats just because the main actor did so well. I mean seriously...she played the part so well.

If they get good actors for bioshock I'm sure it will do well, plus with a director like Gore Verbinski Im sure it has to be good.
