OK, Now It's Just Got Silly

gaywood.jpg

Alright, as amusing as the name Richard Gaywood is, (Dick, if you are being informal), this may be taking things a bit too far. Apparently the good sir Richard, an Xbox Live member from the UK, used his full name as his gamertag. He e-mailed Kotaku about it in response to last weeks gay gamertag issue.

You'd think they would see from his account information that it was his real name (Kotaku apparently confirmed this). Richard's parents, I can only assume, were comedians of the highest order. Hopefully he has a sense of humor about it. (Remember parents, your kids have a say in what nursing home you end up in)

Xbox Live "Gay" Crackdown MIGHT Be Getting A Little Out Of Hand [Kotaku]

Wow. I feel bad for the guy, but on the other hand, this is hilarious. Not only because the guy's name is Dick Gaywood, but also because this is the beginning of yet another internet shitstorm for ol' Microsoft.

Does this mean that no one with any remotely sexual sounding name can use their real name on Live? That's a little tricky given how many words in the English language are somehow used to describe it or related body parts.

Rather than just contacting Kotaku about all this nonsense, has anyone actually botherered to contact whoever is in charge of Xbox Live and told them they're taking this waaay too far?
Or that this behaviour is facilitating homophobia rather than preventing it.

This goes way over the line. MS has basically told a customer that his name is offensive. If it were me I would demand MS apologize and let me keep my name.

Here's a good idea...pick a new name and get on with life. Come on guys...as gay men we have so many more battles in life that are so much more important. Lets really change the world and not get caught up in GamerTag fights.... time to move on!

@Nexus: I'm sure Microsoft would just tell him to change it, they suck like that.

Again, I'm so glad I don't have a Gold account. I really don't want to pay monthly for things like this.

If "Gay" is sexual in nature, then so is "husband" and "wife", since we know that husbands and wives have sex. This is just silly. It reminds me of the AOL ban on the word "breast" in chat room names, icnluding "Breast Cancer Survivors".
